Process for regulating the tarnishing of selenium ruby glasses. Subject
The invention is a method for controlling the tarnishing of selenium-ruby glasses.
It is known to ruby glasses through simultaneous use of selenium
and to produce cadmium, these two elements being in the form of cadinium selenide
or such mixtures or compounds, under the given proportions
supply cadmium selenide in the melt. For the production of such ruby glasses
it has further proven necessary for the presence of sulfur in: the
Form of zinc sulfide to take care of. Such glasses are needed, especially if
if you want to work sparingly with the dye, to develop the ruby color: one
second, heating, the so-called warming up. This one, warming must be very careful
and be carried out evenly, since the start-up process depends on the composition
the glass offset, the thickness of the wall of the object produced from the base glass
and the amount of colorant used. Despite the most steady work at the
Warming up, however, often gives rise to fluctuations in color.
It has now been found that the start-up process can be carried out to the greatest possible extent
can influence and regulate by the fact that; one has the sulfur in the form of various types
Inserts sulfides. Thorough and lengthy investigations have shown that
that alkali sulfides, Alkahrhodanide or Zinkrhodanide accelerate the start-up process
and are therefore similar in their effects to cadmium sulfur. With a particular advantage
Alkali rhodanide, especially potassium rhodanide, can be used for this purpose.
In contrast, the sulphides of zinc, arsenic and iron inhibit the start-up process
to the sulfides and rhodanides of alkalis and: des: zinc. The sulphides of the alkaline earths,
of tin and antimony occupy an intermediate position between these two groups
a.
By suitable selection and addition of these sulfur-containing compounds
in addition
So you have the basic glass in your hand, the start-up process
to regulate as desired.,: d. H. to speed up or slow down. Sd: you can
z. B. when using low, amounts of the coloring agent, which in u for themselves
a longer warming would be necessary, by adding the sulfur in the form '
of compounds of the accelerating group, ie in the form of alkali metal sulfide or
-rhodanid or zinc rhodanide, accelerate the start-up so far that the heating
does not last longer than if one took larger amounts of the coloring agent
would have.
Bedingungen in Sulfide bzw.
Instead of or in addition to the sulfides or rhodanides that regulate
of the start-up process according to the invention can also be used. such
Sulfur-containing compounds of the bases mentioned serve those under the prevailing
Conditions in sulfides or rhodanides: go over or in a known manner with likewise
to be added or added reducing agents to form the sulfides mentioned
are able to. As means of the first type, for. B. organic sulfur compounds
considered as compounds of the second group, for. B. sulfates or sulfites, which
coal or organic substances are added in finely divided form, or by supplying them
of reducing gases, such as. B. carbon., Converted into the corresponding sulfides

Na.0, 6% K.O, 6% Zn0, 5% CarÖ und 2()/'o Naz B.4 07 besitzt, werden auf iookg Sand
1,25 kg Cadmiumselenid und o, i 25 kg Zinksulfid zugefügt.
Example i A glass set that has the composition of 71% Si02, 10% Na.0, 6% KO, 6% Zn0, 5% CarÖ and 2 () / 'o Naz B.4 07 is placed on iookg sand 1, 25 kg of cadmium selenide and 0.15 kg of zinc sulfide were added. When worked out as a thin-walled hollow glass, the .melted glass only starts to turn into the desired ruby color after vigorous warming. EXAMPLE 2 If the zinc sulfide is replaced by the equivalent amount of potassium rhodanide in the glassware set in Example 7: a glass is obtained which acquires the desired ruby color even with a slight warming. If pieces with thicker walls are made from the offset, they already have the deep ruby color even without special heating. It has been found that the start-up process is further accelerated by the addition of halides, e.g. B. sodium chloride, can experience. The quantities of halides "" should advantageously be measured in such a way that, since they already have a considerable vapor pressure at the prevailing high temperatures, the cadmium compounds, which are also volatile and cause the selenium-ruby color, are not carried away when they evaporate . the fluorides, such as cryolite, l g12 'and advantageously used as an additive, -.. Iierbei However, note that they dissolve in the glass only to a limited extent, with the addition of larger, in the glass no longer In general, for example, 2 to 5 kg of cryolite can be added to every 1 ounce of sand used.Example 3 Based on a glass offset as given in Example 1, q.oo kg of sand if 3 kg of cryolite are added, the glass will tarnish even without being warmed up and acquire the desired ruby color.
