Das Schutzgas verhindert die vorschnelle Erwärmung und Verbrennung des Kohlenstaubes und bewirkt, daß ein Teil des Staubes und vor allem seine Verbrennungsrückstände auf das Schmelzbad gelenkt und hier aus dem Gasstrom ausgeschieden und verschlackt werden.
