Process for avoiding surface cracks in the hot working of steel It is known; that during the hot deformation of steel in the area between 950 and izoo ° C, especially if bending is associated with it, fine surface cracks (hairline cracks) easily form, which must be eliminated because of the dangerous notch formation emanating from them. In the case of building materials that are used in the unprocessed state, the removal of these cracks means a very considerable increase in the cost. It was recognized that the cracks are due to the effect of the combustion gases on the grain boundaries, in that these are preferentially attacked. It has already been proposed, but this is not yet part of the state of the art, to avoid cracking by adding sulfur to the combustion gases used to heat the steel. The implementation of this knowledge, however, encountered great difficulties because when adding sulfur in gaseous form, either as hydrogen sulfide or as sulfur dioxide, it is very difficult to correctly measure the required quantities. In addition, the effect of the burnt sulfur leads to health damage to the furnace operator, quite apart from the fact that the furnace lining and the environment exposed to the exhaust gases are also attacked to an inadmissible extent. The use of hydrogen sulfide also requires a larger processor that must be monitored, often refilled with iron and acid, and cleaned. When sulfur dioxide is withdrawn from steel bottles, complete icing occurs due to the cold from evaporation, even when several steel bottles are connected together. Thawing by adding heat causes an irregular outflow of the sulfur dioxide.
These disadvantageous phenomena do not occur in use
of carbon disulfide, in small, precisely measured quantities without difficulty
can be added to the heating gases. As a result, the harassment of the
Operation of the furnace and the harmful effects on the furnace masonry and the environment
avoided. The high flammability of carbon disulfide recommends adding it
to oil, e.g. B. tar oil, whose flash point is due to the small amounts of carbon disulfide
is only insignificantly degraded. Carbon disulfide is also available at low prices
available, its use brings a considerable reduction in price compared to the older one
Proceeding with itself.
