Process for the preparation of oxy-o-carboxybenzoacridones It has been
found that the o-carboxyphenylamino - 2 - oxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acids
by heating with concentrated sulfuric acid to temperatures between about 8o
and 13o ° in smooth conversion into oxy-io-.carb: oxybenzoacridone can convert.
The most favorable temperature range is around go to 100 °. Temperatures worse
130 ° affect both the yield and the purity of this end product.
(Journal. für praktische Chemie [2], Bd. go [1914], S.466).
This fact is surprising because it is repeatedly stated in the literature (e.g. reports of the German Chemical Society, vol. 26 [18g3], p. 25go ff., Liebigs Annalen der Cherniie, vol. 355 [19o7], p. 348 ) that diarylamine-o-carb @ onic acids, which contain a naphthalene residue, cannot be converted into the corresponding naphthacridones by heating with concentrated sulfuric acid, because sulfonation takes place as a result of the easy attack of the taphthalene nucleus. The naphthacridones have therefore hitherto only been obtained in more complicated and expensive ways and in some cases in poor yield. The only naphthacridone which was obtained from the corresponding carboxylic acid by heating with concentrated sulfuric acid is 1,4-naphthioquinone acridone. (Journal. For practical chemistry [2], vol. Go [1914], p.466). This ring closure only succeeds at 200 °, because above 2oo ° decomposition and disintegration of the nuclei occurs, while below 2oo ° the condensation takes place very slowly. It could not therefore be foreseen how the, o-carboxyphenylamine: o-2-ioxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acids would behave when heated with sulfuric acid, and in particular it was not to be expected that the acridone formation would occur practically quantitatively.
The ring closure can also be achieved with other water-splitting agents
Means, for example with phosphomoxychloride or phosphorpenboxyd, carry out,
but here the expansion of acridones is not good.

Erkalten unter schnellem Rühren in i 5oo ccm Wasser einbegossen.

Examples i. ioog 6- (2'-Carb @ oxyphenylamino) -2-oxynaphthalene-3-carbionic acid, which can be obtained by reacting 6-Bnom-2-oxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid with 2-aminobenzoic acid in the presence of an acid-binding agent and a catalyst is, about 95% sulfuric acid is stirred into 300 ccm at about 60 °. It is then held at 90 ° for about an hour and, after cooling, the dark-colored solution is poured into 1500 cc of water with rapid stirring. The mixture is stirred for about another hour, the precipitated reaction product is filtered off while still warm and it is washed completely acid-free with hot water. For cleaning, the product is suspended in hot water, brought into solution by adding sodium carbonate and filtered while hot. On cooling, the sodium salt of the new compound crystallizes out of the filtrate in fine yellow needles. The subsequent addition of small amounts of sodium chloride solution causes the complete precipitation. It is filtered off with suction and washed with very dilute sodium chloride solution. By dissolving the sodium salt in hot water and stirring it into hot, dilute hydrochloric acid, the free acid is eliminated, which is then filtered off with suction and dried. The yield is almost quantitative. After the analysis, the q .'- Oxy-5'-approx .rbioxy- i, 2-benz, oacridone of f:) has the following formula: The acid is a yellow body that is poorly soluble in common organic solvents and has a melting point of over 35o °. The sodium salt shows small yellow needles under the microscope.
