Process for the production of depolarization masses from natural brown stone
According to known methods, good depolarization materials for dry elements are obtained
by using manganese oxide hydrates, as they are in oxidation reactions, for example
the oxidation of toluenesulfonamide or of toluene to benzoic acid with permanganate,
attack. Since these oxide hydrates are only inadequate for the needs
If quantities are available, it was natural to use natural brownstone
to pass over. The pure mineral brownstone is very useful as a depolarizer
unresponsive. It works, either by roasting the brownstone on its own or through
Roasting and subsequent extraction with acids to increase the reactivity.
Tests have shown, however, that this increase is only small.
According to the invention, far better results are obtained if a portion, preferably about 20 to 25%, of the MnO present in the natural brown stone is first converted to Mn203 by roasting, then the Mn203 formed is dissolved with mineral acids or acidic salts and now without separation the solution from the residue precipitates the resulting manganese salts on the brownstone with alkalis - and then oxidizes the precipitated manganese hydroxide with the help of manganates or permanganates. In this way, far more reactive products can be achieved, as can be seen from the following example.
Instead of the mineral acids, organic acids, such as. B. acetic acid,
can be used to dissolve the manganese sesquioxide. For the precipitation of the manganese hydroxides
the alkaline sludge can also be used, which is used in the process
the oxidation of organic substances with permanganate in alkaline solution.
Examples r. Mineral brownstone with z. B. 9o ° 0 MnO, at about 65o to
68o ° roasted for about 2 to 3 hours - about 2o to 25%
of the existing MnO. converted to Mn203. To loosen the roasted food, it gets hot
entered in sulfuric acid, of which about 30% over the solution of the formed
Mn203 theoretically required amount can be used. After the Mn203 came in handy
is completely dissolved, without separation from the residue, by adding alkali
the excess acid is neutralized and the dissolved manganese salt is precipitated as hydroxide,
whereupon the latter to the brownstone level with the help of potassium permanganate
is oxidized.
When testing the depolarization mass obtained in this way, the following results were found:
The pure natural brown stone is one in the ammonia element
separation time
of only q1 / 2 hours. Will the natural brown stone only iöo / o of the treated brown stone
added, one receives an element with a duration of at least 6 hours
300% admixture a performance of 63/4 to 7 hours. In addition, there is 'eia'.
Discharge voltage higher, so that a much higher current yield through admixture
of the treated manganese dioxide is achieved.
Mineral brownstone with z. B. go ° / o MnO, is roasted at about 65o to 68o ° C for about 2 to 3 hours, about. 2o to 2.5% of the existing MnO, converted to Mn203. After roasting, the roasted material is poured into sulfuric acid while hot and treated until the Mn, 0, is practically completely dissolved. To neutralize the excess acid and precipitate the dissolved manganese salt, alkali is added to the mass obtained in this way at temperatures of about 60 to f; o ° C. Simultaneously or after the precipitation, oxygen or oxygen-containing gases are passed through the solution, whereby the manganese hydroxide is oxidized to a manganese hydroxide. To produce depolarizers, 10 to 30% of the artificial brown stone obtained is added to the natural brown stone. The improvement in the properties of the depolarizer is similar to that of the depo-, @, l @ risation mass shown by means of the artificial brown stone obtained in Example i.
