Electric metal filament light bulb with a filling of noble gas and
a halogen as an electro-negative additive The invention relates to electrical
Metal filament incandescent lamps with a filling made from noble gas, in particular from Argen, and
This filling gas can also be used in its pure state for incandescent lamps
usual operating voltage.
It has always been recommended to use metal filament electric light bulbs
to be filled with a pure noble gas, especially pure argon. But it is
failed to use such bulbs at the usual operating voltages, e.g. B. i i
o volts, actually to use. The reason is as follows: Pure noble gases, in particular
Argon, which is relatively cheap to produce, like krypton
a fairly low dielectric strength. As a result, in incandescent lamps,
which are filled with pure argon, an arc that destroys the incandescent lamp.
It has often been proposed to add so-called electronegative gases or vapors to the filling gas in order to avoid arcing. In practice, only the addition of nitrogen has proven successful. However, nitrogen must be added to the argon in an amount of at least about 1 5 % in order to reliably avoid the formation of an arcing. Of course, the increased heat conduction of the filler gas is taken into account and the current yield of the incandescent lamp deteriorates as a result. ,. It is also proposed to introduce phosphorus or chlorine into the incandescent lamp. The effect of phosphorus is far too weak to enable the use of young pure argon. Chlorine, on the other hand, attacks the filament and interferes with even very small amounts. In fact, it has not yet been possible to produce usable incandescent lamps with a pure argon filling for high voltages. The reason why the filaments are attacked by chlorine and the halogens is due to the well-known high chemical activity of the halogens. It is also known that this activity is strongly influenced by the catalytic action of water. This view has been confirmed by experiments.
It has now been found that incandescent lamps filled with pure argon
can be produced in a usable form if dry iodine is added to the filling gas
Steam is added. Iodine does not attack the thread material if it is perfect
is dry and certainly eliminates the possibility of arcing
the end. Contrary to expectations, in this respect it behaves differently than chlorine and the
remaining halogels.
The iodine must be absolutely dry before it is placed in the lamp.
Since the solid iodine holds back the last traces of water very stubbornly, it can
Drying is most useful,
done by sublimation, the
first parts of the sublimate, which contain water, are excreted. These
Pretreatment also has the advantage of removing other impurities from the iodine.
was die genaue Dosierung erschwert.
The usual nickel and copper electrodes through which the current
fed to the filament are also attacked by dry iodine. Through this
the usability of these metals as electrodes is not adversely affected.
You get a protective layer from the corresponding iodine compounds, which they
from further destruction. Part of the iodine is naturally bound by
which makes the exact dosage difficult. It is therefore advisable to make the electrodes unassailable
close. This can be done by covering them with a protective layer,
z. B. `platinum-plated. The electrodes, possibly also other metal components of the. Lamp,
but can also consist entirely of a metal that is not attacked by iodine
will; z. B. made of tungsten or molybdenum. - However, it is not absolutely necessary that
To manufacture electrodes from unassailable material. Those on the surface of the
Nickel or copper electrodes have formed iodine compounds `at the operating temperature
such a high decomposition pressure that elemental iodine in the lamp is sufficient
Amount is present to exert the desired effect.
The iodine addition in the light bulb can. be increased far, it will
A limit was set for it only by the fact that the iodine vapor in a higher concentration
Measurably absorbed light. Experience has shown that this limit is at a pressure of
about 10 mm of mercury. The gas filling according to the invention can advantageously be used in
