Abstract
A method for authenticating a mobile device (105), CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the method comprises:- receiving a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: an infrared channel, IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter- receiving authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being one of a radio frequency identification channel or an optical channel; and- processing the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
Claims (22)
- A method for authenticating a mobile device (105), CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the method comprises: - receiving a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: an infrared channel, IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being one of a radio frequency identification channel or an optical channel; and - processing the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
- The method of claim 1, wherein the communication request (300) is received by a second mobile device (105), and the secondary channel (415) is a mobile-tomobile channel between the first and second mobile devices (105).
- The method of claim 2, wherein the authentication data is processed by the second mobile device (105) to pair the first and second mobile devices (105).
- The method of claim 1, wherein if the secondary channel is a radio frequency identification channel, the secondary channel (415) is operable to exchange the authentication data between a distance of about 1 m or less.
- The method of claim 4, wherein the authentication data is a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.
- The method of claim 5, wherein the RFID is varied according to a predetermined time interval.
- The method of claim 1, wherein if the secondary channel is an optical channel, the secondary channel (415) is operable to exchange the authentication data between a distance of about 1 meter or less.
- The method of claim 7, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader.
- The method of claim 8, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105).
- The method of claim 8, wherein the bar code (505) is permanently embossed on the mobile device (105).
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical channel, and wherein the authentication data exchanged over the secondary channel (415) varies at certain time intervals; and - processing the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), and wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner; and - processing the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving, by a second device, a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving, by the second device, authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), and wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner; and - processing the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device, wherein the authentication data serves as a time varying parameter for an authentication algorithm, and wherein the mobile device and the second device must be synchronized for the authentication to be successful.
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving, by a second device, a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving, by the second device, authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical .channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the second device is a mobile device; and - processing, by the second device, the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving, by a second device, a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving, by the second device, authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the second device is a mobile device, and wherein the bar code is presented on the display (500) while the mobile device (105) is in proximity of the reader (430); and - processing, by the second device, the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device.
- A system for authenticating a mobile device, the system being configured for: - receiving, by a second device, a communication request (300) from the mobile device (105), wherein the mobile device (105) is operable to exchange data over a primary channel (400), and wherein the communication request (300) is received using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - receiving, by the second device, authentication data (305) from the mobile device (105) over a secondary channel (415), wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the second device is a mobile device, and wherein the bar code is presented on the display (500) while the mobile device (105) is in proximity of the reader (430); and - processing, by the second device, the authentication data (310) to determine whether the mobile device (105) is a trusted device, wherein the authentication data serves as a time varying parameter for an authentication algorithm, wherein the mobile device and the second device must be synchronized for the authentication to be successful,.
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, and wherein the authentication data exchanged over the secondary channel (415) varies at certain time intervals.
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), and wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner.
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the authentication data serves as a time varying parameter for an authentication algorithm, and wherein the mobile device and the second device must be synchronized for the authentication to be successful.
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, and wherein the second device is a mobile device.
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the second device is a mobile device, and wherein the bar code is presented on the display (500) while the mobile device (105) is in proximity of the reader (430).
- A mobile device for authentication with a second device, the mobile device (105) being operable to exchange data over a primary channel, the mobile device being configured for: - sending a communication request (300) using the primary channel (400), the primary channel being one of: IEEE 802.3 channel, Ethernet channel, code-division multiple access, CDMA, channel, Bluetooth channel or global system for mobile communication, GSM, channel; and thereafter - sending authentication data (305) over a secondary channel (415) to a second device, wherein the secondary channel (415) is a short-range channel operable for exchanging data when the mobile device (105) is within physical proximity of the second device, the secondary channel being an optical channel, wherein the authentication data includes data encoded on a bar code (505), and receiving the authentication data further comprises capturing an image of the bar code (505) using a reader, wherein the bar code (505) is electronically generated and presented on a display of the mobile device (105), wherein the bar code is changing according to a predetermined schedule or in a random manner, wherein the authentication data serves as a time varying parameter for an authentication algorithm, wherein the mobile device and the second device must be synchronized for the authentication to be successful, wherein the second device is a mobile device, and wherein the bar code is presented on the display (500) while the mobile device (105) is in proximity of the reader (430).
