Process for obtaining pure fatty acids It is known by oxidation
mixtures of substances obtained from high molecular weight hydrocarbons, in particular from paraffin
or to bleach the crude fatty acids separated therefrom by treatment with hydrogen.
Although light-colored and odorless products are obtained here, they have them
as well as the soaps made from them in many cases despite the reducing treatment
the disadvantage that they darken slightly when heated or stored.

It has now been found that pure, stable fatty acids are obtained which, even after saponification, no longer have the above-mentioned darkening property, if the low-boiling acids are removed from the mixture of oxidation products or the crude or distilled fatty acids separated from them before treatment with hydrogen Components, expediently those boiling at a pressure of 4 mm Hg to about 200 °, removed by distillation. To avoid local overheating during the distillation, it is advisable to keep the product in motion during the heating by stirring and the like. It has also proven to be advantageous to carry out the distillation in the presence of substances with a large surface, such as active coals or natural or artificial bleaching earths such as fuller's earth, so-called Tonsil and the like. B. ß-naphthalene monosulfonic acid to perform. The process can be carried out at any stage in the work-up of the oxidation mixture, that is to say both with the crude oxidation product itself and after saponification or after extraction of the unsaponifiable material or after the soaps have been cleaved with mineral acids. Example r 3o parts of an oxidation product obtained from soft paraffin according to patent 4o5 85o are mixed with zo parts of fuller's earth, e.g. B. Tonsil, mixed, whereupon at 15o ° and a vacuum of 3 mm Hg with good stirring 6 parts of low-boiling acidic ingredients mixed with unsaponifiables and 2 parts of water are distilled off over the course of 2 hours. The key figures and the content of unsaponifiables and oxy acids have changed as follows: Acid Saponification Unsaponification Oxy

250 parts of this product, pretreated in this way and freed from bleaching earth, are stored for hours at 25 ° and at a pressure of 25 atm. treated with hydrogen in the presence of 2 parts of a kieselguhr nickel catalyst containing 20 ° 10 nickel. From this oxidation product, after saponification, extraction of the unsaponifiable and cleavage of the soap with sulfuric acid, a fairly light color is obtained, the content of which is insoluble in petroleum ether, below 1 11, and which after distillation is very light, hardly when standing in the heat supplies darkening fatty acid. The soaps made from it are light in color and do not darken either. -Example-2 - - - Crude fatty acid obtained by oxidation of hard paraffin, saponification, extraction of the unsaponifiable and cleavage of the soap with sulfuric acid is distilled with heating to 2800 and a vacuum of 8 mm Hg with the aid of steam. The yellow-colored distillate fatty acid turns dark when standing in the heat and dark when saponified. If this fatty acid is heated for one hour with 20 parts of fuller's earth at r 50 ° and a vacuum of 4 mm Hg while stirring, with 6 ° / 0 of oil-like constituents distilling off in addition to water, then after filtering off the fuller's earth and treating with hydrogen in the In the manner described in example r, a colorless fatty acid which does not change to a dark color either on standing in the heat or on saponification.
