Abstract
The packing element is used for installations for energy and/or mass transfer or demisters, for example for cooling towers, for trickling filters in biological effluent treatment units or for chemical columns, for heat exchangers in direct contact with media, for liquid distributors, and aerators. It has a multiplicity of passage channels (11) located side by side in a grid pattern and carrying a flow of gaseous and/or liquid media. The axes (12) of the passage channels (11) essentially follow a helical line over the major part of their length. Imaginary corresponding points of the successive cross-section contours along this axis (12) of each passage channel are located on a line parallel to the axis of this passage channel, so that a straight line located in the plane of a cross-section and joining the axis of the passage channel and a point of the cross- section contour essentially retains its direction in space over the length of this passage channel. <IMAGE>
