Je nach den Nitrierungsbedingungen können verschiedene Nitronitrate erhalten werden, welche die günstigen Eigenschaften der aromatischen Nitroverbindungen und der Salpetersäureester von Alkoholen vereinigen. Diese Stoffe weisen eine sehr hohe Sprengkraft und Brisanz auf und sind gute Gelatinatoren für Nitrocellulose. Sie sind daher besonders zur Herstellung von rauchlosen Pulvern und zur Herstellung von gepreßten oder gegossenen Sprengladungen, als Füllung für Granaten, Minen usw. geeignet. Zur Erzielung eines niedrigen Schmelzpunktes können Gemische verschiedener Nitronitrate oder Gemische mit anderen bekannten Stoffen verwendet werden.
