The inherently advantageous welding in electrical Arc has the disadvantage that the welds cannot be forged and are easily brittle. One has this appearance on one in the presence of the Oxygen in the air caused the metal to be oxidized, but also in Welds made with practically pure nitrogen produce the same defects. Further However, attempts in this direction have shown that the harmful effect of the Nitrogen, which forms nitrides in the arc with the weld metal, only in the presence even if there are minor traces of oxygen. It seems that first of all the oxygen forms a bond with the weld metal, which is then exposed to the heat of the arc is replaced by nitrogen. From this catalyst-like effect explain that even very small traces of oxygen allow welding in a nitrogen atmosphere affect unfavorably.
The invention is intended to weld or cut metals by melting in an electric arc in a cheap protective atmosphere of nitrogen by removing the traces of oxygen present in the nitrogen through a Addition of hydrogen, which has a greater affinity for oxygen than the metal, be made ineffective.
The mixing ratio to be adhered to depends on the type of work carried out Welding and the desired arc voltage. If it is metals or Alloys that become easily porous or brittle due to the absorption of hydrogen, it is advisable to keep the hydrogen content as low as possible. He can go so far " be reduced so that the mixture gets a very high ignition point or in Air does not become flammable at all.
The invention also extends to simple and inexpensive ways of manufacturing the Protective gas mixture and suitable facilities.
Wenn die Schweißung jedoch in freier Luft durchgeführt wird, istIf the welding is carried out in a closed container, in a protective cover- ο ·. like is made and the hydrogen as well as the nitrogen have a high Gi; ad of Purity, then about 6 percent by volume of hydrogen is sufficient to remove the traces of voii To bind oxygen that is present in the shielding gases or in the weld metal or to render harmless. However, if the weld is carried out in the open air, it is
, .a higher hydrogen content of the protective gas is necessary in order to render harmless the air that reaches the black body through the formation of eddies. Depending on the type of welding torch and material, the hydrogen content can be considerably higher. Good results were achieved with 20 ° / 0 hydrogen. A low hydrogen content is particularly important in the case of alloys that absorb hydrogen easily. The method according to the invention is therefore particularly suitable for welding nickel-chromium alloys, and very good results have been achieved with stellite welds. The welding in protective gas according to the invention can be carried out in such a way that the gases are mixed in a suitable ratio and fed to the arc, or a nitrogen-hydrogen compound can be fed to the arc, decomposed or undecomposed. ,.
The method can also be transferred to electrical cutting. then it is possible that the hydrogen content increases the arc voltage, so that larger Amounts of energy can be converted, which allows faster work. Albeit the high content of inert gas such as nitrogen in the arc atmosphere If the voltage is reduced for the same arc length, the protective atmosphere is ensured but a steady burning of the arc and enables its length to be kept longer than in air. For electrical cutting, arc voltages from 70 to 100 volts proven.
The production of the shielding gas mixture: for welding or cutting in the electrical Arc can expediently take place in such a way that an air-hydrogen mixture is burned. Mixing burners such as those used for ammonia generation systems can be used for this purpose are known to be used. This increases the oxygen in the air +5 water is burned, and the remaining nitrogen-hydrogen mixture can be used if necessary be freed from water vapor before it is sent to the place of use: got.
Another cheap starting material for the protective atmosphere is ammonia, which dissociates. and can be fed to the arc. The dissociation can also be carried out in the arc itself. However, it is more advantageous to do it separately beforehand so that the worker is not bothered by ammonia that remains undissociated in the arc. In this case it is also possible to enrich the protective gas with nitrogen before it is used. The '■■ generated by the dissociation mixture contains 75 volume percent hydrogen and i 25 ° / 0 nitrogen. It is therefore a very hydrogen-rich and therefore comparatively expensive protective gas, but its volume can be doubled by heating to 300 ° C. The use of shielding gas during welding is not great, so that the contents of a portable ammonia container can be used to generate shielding gas for welding work for several weeks.
In the drawing are devices for carrying out the method according to the invention shown schematically.
Abb, ι zeigt eine Einrichtung für Handschweißung, Fig, ι shows a device for manual welding,
Fig. 2 for semi-automatic welding. Fig. 3 illustrates a mixing burner. In the device shown in Fig. 1, the container 1 becomes gaseous ammonia passed through the valve 2 to the decomposer 3, which is indicated by a Bunsen burner is heated. Otherwise it can be of any type and sponge iron and iron filings contain as a contact substance. The dissociated hydrogen-nitrogen mixture reaches the hood 4, which is placed over the workpiece 5. This is connected by line 10 to the pole of a power source, while the means of 9.) the holder 9 guided electrode 6 via a reactance 7 and an Ohm resistor 8 connected to the other pole of the power source. The electrode can be a metal or Be carbon electrode. Appropriately, direct current is used for welding and the workpiece is placed on the positive pole. The protective gas mixture burns in some Distance above the hood opening.
Instead of a hood, a hollow ring can be used on the inside perforated like a sieve -and above by an asbestos plate with a passage opening for the electrode is complete. The protective gas is then fed to the hollow ring. In this case, a contact substance or a catalyst can be used in the cavity of the ring housed and the ring provided with an additional heater. Then it will be Undecomposed ammonia is fed to the ring, Ho decomposes here and leaves in a dissociated state as a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture, the protective ring through the inner sieve openings, so that a special decomposer is saved. Of course you can too the hood 4 can be formed in this way.

The welding torch 21 receives the protective gas mixture through the flexible line 20. This is in the decomposer 3 generated, which consists of a central piece of pipe 16 with heating coil 17 made of chrome-nickel, a filling compound 18 made of sponge iron or iron filings and that with asbestos 19 insulated housing. The ammonia is discharged from the container 1 via the valve 2 fed to the decomposer, sweeps the filling compound in the direction of the arrow from above down and passes through the central tube 16 up into the line 20. The Filling compound is kept at the required temperature by the heating coil 17.
In order to achieve fully automatic welding, it is only necessary to make a relative movement between the welding torch 21 and the workpiece by automatic means to create. In many cases it is advisable to use the mixture obtained directly by dissociation of Ammo'niak to be enriched with nitrogen before use; a mixing burner is used for this, such as it is shown in Fig. 3.
From the decomposer 3, the mixture with 75% hydrogen passes through a controllable needle valve 28 into the burner tube 31, which is located in the combustion chamber 27.
A heating coil 30 made of chrome-nickel allows a corresponding temperature control. Air is supplied to the combustion chamber through the valve 29 in a controllable amount. The combustion chamber has good thermal insulation and can contain ignition electrodes known per se. In this burner, the oxygen content of the air supplied is bound to part of the hydrogen from the dissociated ammonia, so that a nitrogen-rich hydrogen-nitrogen mixture with a water vapor content resulting from the combustion leaves the combustion chamber. While the ignition temperature of pure hydrogen in the presence of sufficient oxygen is 294 ° C., it is increased significantly by dilution with nitrogen, so that ignition temperatures of 600 to 800 and 1000 ° C. result.
If the water vapor content of the mixture to be withdrawn is not great, then it also has the weld has no harmful effect. However, if the water vapor content is higher the connection of a capacitor 33 is preferable. It is provided with cooling fins 34, has a lockable overflow opening 36 and a sight glass 35. Also the supply line 32 can receive cooling surfaces 34.
The mixing burner described can of course also be used to generate a hydrogen mixture from hydrogen and air. The oxygen content of the air is then increased by some of the hydrogen Water is bound so that nitrogen and hydrogen leave the combustion chamber.
The decomposition, dilution and condensation plant (for the water vapor) can also be operated completely independently of the welding system, as it is hydrogen and nitrogen do not simply reunite to form ammonia and therefore can be stored or stored in gasometers.
Instead of ammonia, any other material that contains hydrogen and nitrogen and can be split into these gases can also be used to generate the protective gas. 1 Trimethylammonia N (CH 3 ) 3 has given good results. The dissociation produces nitrogen, hydrogen and a small amount of free carbon. If liquid compounds break down, it is advisable to vaporize them beforehand. In order to prevent the harmful effects of large amounts of free carbon, carbon dioxide or water vapor is added when such compounds are broken down, as a result of which the carbon is converted to carbon monoxide, which is not harmful to the weld.
