Description

Method of vitaminizing. Foodstuffs and similar substances by ultraviolet irradiation It has already been found that when irradiated of foods, medicinal substances and the like with ultra-violet light for the purpose of Vitaminization or induction of other chemical reactions at the same time ozone formation that takes place is often harmful. That is why it has already been suggested in the case of ultraviolet irradiation of food and the like, the air from the treatment room either to be removed or to be replaced by a neutral gas such as carbon dioxide. Apart from the fact that this significantly complicates the apparatus and ; the working process depends on the filling of the treatment room with carbonic acid or other gases. Therefore questionable because they may cause a different one Change in the food to be treated or the like. Can be effected. So is raised concerns about irradiating milk in a carbonic acid atmosphere been (Zeitschrift für angewandte Chemie 1928, p. 785, left column, paragraph ¢) that the carbonic acid remaining in the milk when this process is used Flatulence in the infant intestine could be the cause. The application of nitrogen for filling the treatment room is out of the question because it is practical is not possible to keep the nitrogen so oxygen-free that thereby a Ozone formation could be avoided with certainty. If the treatment room is merely evacuated if it is also generally not possible to exclude the oxygen sufficiently, and on the other hand would, even if without taking special precautions would be possible to be present that by evacuating the treated Food or the like. Important volatile components are enti removed.

Furthermore, it should also be noted that the used to replace the air so-called inert gases, such as carbonic acid, also harmful in this respect. works than they can absorb effective intensities of radiation and the ultraviolet Light undesirable side reactions of these gases with those caused by the irradiation alone can cause substances to be activated.

It has also been suggested to use radiation filters for vitaminization made of Pyrex glass to be used. At best, however, this leaves only the short-wave Beams up to about 28o t, # L traverse downwards. But now lies how in particular is also confirmed by recent work, a major maximum of the absorption spectrum of the highly purified anti-rachitic vitamin at 257 # t # L. When using a Pyrex filters are not just the ozone-generating ones below 220 ## Blasting excluded ". Instead, they remain for the vitaminization very important rays, which are below z8o@t&.A, unused.

According to the invention, a calcium carbonate plate is now used as a filter, " the activating radiation also in the area between - 28o to aao # t &, lets through unhindered, on the other hand the harmful, ozone-generating rays below effectively shields this limit.

By using such a filter, the. simplest This prevents the formation of ozone in the surroundings and in the interior of the irradiated object made without it being necessary to apply other precautionary measures of any kind, like evacuation or use of indifferent gases, and that with full utilization the vitaminizing rays.
