Infolgedessen hätte man annehmen müssen, daß das Schwefeldioxyd vor seiner Verflüssigung nochmals einer Reinigung unterworfen werden muß. Es zeigte sich aber bei der Verarbeitung dieser verunreinigten Sulfite, daß der bei der Zersetzung auftretende Schwefelwasserstoff durch das Schwefeldioxyd unter Bildung von Schwefel oxydiert wird, wodurch der Schwefelwasserstoff infolge des großen Schwefeldioxydüberschusses vollständig umgesetzt wird. Diese Beobachtung ist deshalb überraschend, weil die Umsetzung zwischen Schwefelwasserstoff und Schwefeldioxyd im allgemeinen sehr langsam verläuft.
