Description
Process for the usable processing of sawdust that is used in woodworking Sawdust accumulating in large quantities often forms an annoying waste product, which is mainly only used as fuel, although it is inadequate it is known that treatment at high temperatures can result in valuable products, such as acetic acid, methyl alcohol, acetone.
The present invention aims to utilize this fact in an operationally easier way than before and with better yields than hitherto to be carried out. This is done according to the invention in such a way that the sawdust is made into a suspension with water, to which caustic lime is preferably added, and that this suspension is continuously pumped through a high-pressure apparatus, in which it takes a longer time (for example, two hours) in a section of the same. is exposed to continuous heating to about 300 ° C. Under the influence of this heating, considerable amounts of acetic acid or acetate, methyl alcohol and acetone are produced when the wood substance partially decomposes to carbonaceous and tarry substances. The essential importance of the invention is that by converting the sawdust into a suspension by adding the alien water or the aqueous caustic alkali solution, it is possible to pump the sawdust through a line and in this way to cause it to decompose in a continuous operation. In this respect the process is similar to the known process for liquefying coal by converting the coal into a suspension in OI. However, it differs from this previously known method by using the foreign suspending agent (water or caustic alkali solution) instead of the similar agent, oil, which is used in the coal liquefaction process mentioned.
Although it has already been suggested in the distillation of Sawdust the dry flour by means of transport devices through the heating room move through; such distillation process, the dry sawdust is decomposed by heating, however, are available to the method of the present invention both in terms of convenience of implementation and in terms of Yield of valuable substances after. The latter is also the case if, as already proposed that the volatile distillation products be added to an alkali solution will.
Also the decomposition of the sawdust in the form of an aqueous, caustic alkali containing suspension is not in itself new. However, it is only discontinuous and carried out for experimental purposes, so that this work is also opposed the new knowledge is available that the suspension is the means of convenient implementation of continuous operation.
Embodiment z Air-dry Bucbenholz sawdust are in the four times the amount by weight of water and at such speed Passed through a pressure apparatus that it was about two hours of maximum temperature of 300 ° C at a pressure of about xro Atm. are exposed.
This gives 6 percent acetic acid, 21/2 percent methyl alcohol, z1 / 2 percent acetone, all calculated on the weight of the air-dry chips, and plenty of tar.
Embodiment 2 Air-dry beechwood sawdusts are dissolved with 50 percent of their weight in potassium hydroxide, mixed in 80 percent of their weight in water, whereupon the mass is passed through a pressure apparatus at such a speed that it reaches the maximum temperature of 300 ' at 150 atm for about two hours. is exposed. You get zx percent acetic acid, 3 percent methyl alcohol, 1/1 percent acetone, all based on the weight of the starting material, and copious amounts of tar.
