Description
It has been proposed to make double metal plates by plating a steel plate on each side with copper, brass or other metal. Here, outer layers of thin sheet metal that is electrically coated with copper or the like are used, or of composite layers of copper and brass, the brass coming to rest on the steel. The connection of the outer layers with the steel takes place under hydraulic pressure at a temperature of 800 to 1000 °, after which the whole is rolled to the desired thickness. In this known method, no provision is made to prevent the steel from being oxidized, while the present invention effectively prevents the iron or steel from being oxidized when clad with other metals. A strong metal coating can be firmly bonded to steel without the risk of oxidation. This is achieved through the use of an intermediate layer of granulated metal, which is of the same type as the metal of the top layer and so finely granulated that. it acts as a seal and is mixed with a flux. This intermediate layer is inserted between the iron or steel and 1 the top layer. The whole thing is placed in a crucible and heated so that both the intermediate and top layers of metal melt; the intermediate layer melts directly onto the plate and the top layer bonds with the intermediate layer.
It has now been proposed to use a metal plate with an iron base plate clad by using finely divided solder as an intermediate layer. However, the present invention uses a thick metal layer as an intermediate layer, which consists of consists of the same metal as the top layer. The attachment between the two Metals can be reinforced by making the surface of the harder metal Treated with acid for a long enough time to give the harder metal a grained or give rough surface 211.
The drawing shows a section through the crucible containing the two metals contains with the intervening flux before the whole is exposed to heat will.
Die beiden Metalle werden erhitzt, so daß das Messing auf dem Nickelstahl schmilztWhen the invention is used, the thermostatic material is made of double metal or an alloy composed of two metals with different expansion coefficients, namely nickel steel! and brass. The two metals are heated so that the brass melts on the nickel steel
'To. For this purpose, a plate made of nickel steel 1 is placed on the bottom of a crucible or a refractory clay bowl 2, as the drawing shows, the bottom of which is slightly larger than the plate in order to allow its expansion. A flux made of powdery melt borax is then mixed with high quality fine brass grain and the mixture 3 is applied to the upper surface of the plate 1 so that the latter is completely covered. A layer 4 of high quality coarse brass grain is then placed on top of the flux mixture 3 as shown. The crucible 2 is then placed in a muffle furnace and its contents heated to a temperature at which the brass melts, but the nickel steel, which has a higher melting point, does not. After cooling, it turns out that the brass has bonded tightly to the nickel steel, so that there is a perfectly tight union between the two metals and the thermostatic material can be rolled out to the required thickness without the two metals separating from one another. After rolling, the panels can be cut into strips of the required size. Instead of the layer of coarse brass grain 4, a brass plate of appropriate thickness can be placed over the cover of the flux with the fine-grained brass 3 on the nickel steel plate 1. The heat then melts the brass plate in the same way.
Any suitable metals with different coefficients of expansion that adhere to one another can be used in place of brass and nickel steel, if desired.
Ebenso kann ein beliebiges Flußmittel angewendet werden.Any flux can also be used.
Even better adhesion between the two metals is achieved in that the Surface of the nickel steel or the corresponding other metal well suited and then with an acid for a long enough time to form a grainy or light rough surface is treated, so that the brass or the metal to be melted results in better and more intimate adhesion. This kind serves to unite the two metals with one another! in the bucket Welding superior way. The process can be sped up by. Admixture of sulfuric or nitric acid with a small percentage of double chromic acid Potash.
