Process for the treatment of a rubber insulation for submarine and
other cables and for electrical lines The subject matter of the invention is a
Method for producing insulation for electrical lines, in particular
for submarine cables whose electrical constants do not fluctuate significantly over time
are exposed.
It has already been proposed to use paraffin as a filler and as an impregnating agent
to be used for the rubber insulation of cables so as to improve the insulation properties
to improve the cable. However, it has been found that cables with paraffin
have been impregnated with regard to their mechanical properties and their service life
were adversely affected. The invention consists in a method of making rubber cables
to impregnate by means of paraffins in such a way that not only the electrical constants
of the cable are retained in the water, but that also the mechanical properties
and dimensions are not impaired. This way it becomes an insulating material
created, which can be compared with gutta-percha, but in its production
is much cheaper. Thorough attempts have been made to find methods for
Finding treatment of rubber that makes its electrical constants more permanent
should be made, and as a result of these experiments the following has been found
result of the method described, by which it is possible to determine the degree of
Rubber insulation of the cable to reduce the absorption exerted or the damaging

To reduce the amount if such absorption, or rather adsorption, should occur.
The word absorption is intended here for the sake of simplicity in its general meaning
be used without giving an explanation for the particular exact process,
through which the water gets into the material or is retained in it
will. The rubber behaves as if it has porosity towards certain substances,
its pores being microscopic.
besitzen.According to the invention, the rubber after it is on the conductor
has been applied, first treated to remove the moisture, and
aldann introduced into an isolating agent in the liquid state, which
is absorbed by the rubber before it is absorbed by water or an aqueous solution
exposure, the inclusion of which has a deleterious effect on the electrical constants
of the cable. It has been found that molten paraffin is a
is suitable liquid for this purpose, but other substances or
Mixtures of substances are used that have the marked properties
own.
The paraffin is not used as a filler material. This would be
the case when the paraffin is mixed with the rubber before
turn
the rubber would be intimately mixed as an insulation material. Rather, the paraffin becomes
used to moderately impregnate the cable covered with the rubber,
namely after the insulation material is placed on the cable ladder and into the
is brought into the correct shape. Tests have shown that an impregnation in this

According to the invention, the rubber-covered submarine cable, after it has received its shape by applying the insulating sheath, such as rubber, is first heated in order to drive off the moisture and then immersed in molten paraffin, in which it remains for some time, which is sufficient to allow it to pick up paraffin on and near the outer surface. If this permissible level is exceeded, the rubber absorbs so much paraffin that its mechanical properties are influenced in an unfavorable sense that, in particular, an increase in dimensions, ie swelling, occurs. In order to facilitate handling, the rubber-insulated cable is first wound onto a trellis or latticework or on a perforated reel, which is then hung in a chamber, the temperature of which is maintained at approximately 93 ° C. This chamber is equipped with suction devices to remove any water vapor expelled from your insulation material. After a time sufficient for the water trapped in the rubber layer to expel, which is four hours for submarine cables of normal dimensions, the cable is soaked by being sunk into a vat containing molten paraffin located in the lower part of the chamber. The time required for a good soak is about 15 minutes under atmospheric pressure; but if the impregnation is carried out under higher pressure, a shorter period is sufficient. After soaking, the reel is lifted out of the vat and any excess liquid is drained off.
If it is also expedient, the cable in driving out the moisture
