Description
The description of the details in connection with the drawing provides an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. I is a top plan view of the device, and Figs. 2-5 are Graphical representations> showing the various process stages in the Explain treatment of the device.
For the purposes of the invention, the division of the device i, which has the shape of a semicircle and consists of transparent material, consists of 576 subdivisions of a circle, of which 288 fall into the semicircle of the device. The semicircular arc of the device is divided into three cyleiche sections 2, 3 and 4, each of which is divided into 96 parts. Sections 2 and 4 on either side of the middle section 3 represent an octave and are each divided into 96 parts, whereby a coarser division into only six parts, as in , 5, is made visible, the number of full tones in corresponds to an octave. Each of these subdivisions is again divided into 16 different parts, so that it is possible to have an equal number of fractions of any particular full tone represented; in other words, each full tone of an octave can be divided into half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth tones with the help of this device.
To do this, a line 6 is first drawn (see Fig. 2), which length is equal to the actual length of a guitar string, of a banjo or similar instrument or the length of a reed of a clarinet, Flute or such an instrument.
This line now represents the fundamental tone, and a line 7 is then drawn, which bisects line 6 in two octaves according to the well-known theory. According to FIG. 3, the device is then placed on one end of the line 6 in such a way that the line marked 8 on the device coincides with the line 6. From the geometric center g from the graduation lines in sections: 2 and q. the device with its 96 parts are then drawn lines io which intersect line 7 at points ii. With the distance of the points ii from the center 9 of the semicircle, a circle 12 (Figs. 4 and 5) is described, and this circle is then bisected by a line which runs through the center at right angles to the line 6. The semicircle formed in this way is divided into three equal sections by two lines io. Then, using the apparatus, a number of points are marked on the arc of that circle on opposite sides of line 6 which is equal to the number of tones to be produced by the string or wind instrument within the range of the octave. Thus, as shown in Fig. 5, between the points 0 and 96 on each side of the line 6 there are five points which divide each section of the circle into six equal parts, each of which represents a full tone. If semitones are used, then each of these six parts is halved with the aid of the device, and quarter tones can be halved again, as previously described, etc. The mutually corresponding points on opposite sides of the line 6 are now connected by tendons, which this line in intersect points 13 to 17 and divide the part of the line between its one end and its intersection with line 7 into six sections (each representing a full tone) so that the distances between these points gradually decrease towards the end 18 of the line .
If the line 6 is so divided, represents the distance between any of points 13 to 17 (or further points, if the line for half, quarter and smaller tones) and the end i8 of the line is exactly the partial length of the entire length of the string in the correct proportion, which is necessary for the flawless production of a certain note in the octave is necessary, and these are the points at which a handle bar is attached to the neck of a stringed instrument.
