Bei den bekannten Destillier- oder Rektifizierapparaten, die in eine große Anzahl übereinanderliegende Kammern geteilt sind, wird der aufsteigende Dampf mittels kappenartiger Glocken so geleitet, daß er die Flüssigkeit der oberen Kammer durchstreichen muß, ehe er weiter nach oben steigen kann. Es findet also hierbei eine Umkehrung in der Stromrichtung statt. Die zu diesem Zweck bisher verwendeten Kappen haben die Form von flachen Glocken mit fast geradem, nach oben oder nach unten gewölbtem Boden. Der aufsteigende Dampf prallt also fast senkrecht gegen diese flachen Glockenböden. Dies ergibt eine heftige Reibung und damit einen nicht unwesentlichen Widerstand, der sich entsprechend der Glockenzahl vervielfacht. Da zum Betrieb von Destillierapparaten vorwiegend Abdampf zur Verwendung kommt, der nur eine niedrige Spannung besitzt, so ist es wünschenswert, daß diese Apparate gleichfalls mit möglichst niedriger Dampfspannung arbeiten, so daß jede Möglichkeit der Verringerung der Dampfspannung von Wert ist.
