Description

The main patent contains a refining process for aluminum-silicon alloys described, according to which the molten alloy with a salt mixture that a Alkali fluoride or components that can form an alkali fluoride contains. By The treatment with this salt mixture succeeds in aluminum-silicon alloys to obtain the mechanical properties of which are essentially those of the untreated material surpass. The refinement takes place in such a way that the salt mixture in small Quantities placed on the surface of the molten alloy and covered with a coal dust is stirred in. The applied salt mixture reacts vigorously with the Alloy one, as evidenced by the appearance of yellow flames and white, dense ones Makes smoke externally recognizable. It has been shown that the course of the reaction Occasionally it happens too quickly and, as a result, the refinement is not largely done enough done. It may be partly with accidental temperature conditions or are also related to the physical nature of the available salts. It has now been found that this unfavorable course of the reaction can be avoided can fix that one can add silicon compounds of any kind to the salt mixture Type, especially of silicates or of silicic acid. With such an addition, which can be kept in small amounts, the reaction proceeds smoothly instead, and a failure of the refinement will be avoided with certainty
