angewiesen. Die Reduktion des Citronellals mittels Natriumamalgam und Eisessig zum
entsprechenden Alkohol CIOH2o0 hat erstmalig D o d g e (American chemical Journal
1889, S. 463) mit schlechter Ausbeute ausgeführt. Seine Methode erfuhr späterhin
durch T i e m a n n und S c h m i d t (Berichte 29, 9o6) und S k i t a (Berichte
beziehen. H e s s e (Patentschrift 256716) und P a a 1 (Patenschrift 298193) haben
Wert besitzt.Process for the preparation of rhodinol. For technical extraction

dienen. It has now been found that 3-7-dimethylocten-6-ol-1, the most valuable constituent of rose oil, can be reached in a new, more convenient and more productive way if one uses methylheptenol (Rupe and Sch1ochoff, reports 38, 1499) replaces the hydroxyl group with halogen, allows magnesium to act on the halide obtainable in this way, reacts the resulting magnesium compound with ethylene oxide in a manner known per se and decomposes the reaction product in the usual way with water. The processes are as follows: Of course, other derivatives of 2 # thyleiiglylkols, z. B. the Äthvlenlialogenhydrine, serve in a suitable manner for the reaction with the magnesium alkyl halide.
That a methylheptenyl halide, the instability of the allyl halides
even surpasses, with magnesium, with the smooth formation of magnesium methylheptenyl halide
would react was unpredictable. Rather, it was to be expected here
splitting off of hydrogen halide with the formation of unsaturated compounds

A mixture of 100 parts by weight of methylheptenyl bromide with 500 parts by weight of dry ether is allowed to flow to 240 parts by weight of magnesium shavings, with cooling. After the end of the action, 450 parts by weight of ethylene oxide are added dropwise, with good cooling and stirring. When all of the ethylene oxide has been added, the mixture is stirred for a further 2 hours and the reaction mixture is then poured onto ice water, to which 300 parts by weight of acetic acid are added. The ether solution is lifted off, washed neutral, the ether is evaporated and the residue is distilled in vacuo. The Rhodinol is characterized as a colorless liquid. fine rose scent preserved. KP.
