Es ist bekannt, daß Fe-Si-Gußstücke mit hohem Si-Gehalt einen hohen Grad von Sprödigkeit besitzen und leicht zu Warm- und Kaltrissen neigen. Man hat versucht, diesem Übelstand durch Ausglühen bzw. Anwärmen des gegossenen Stückes abzuhelfen, ohne jedoch über die eigentliche Ursache dieses Springens Klarheit gewonnen zu haben. In letzter Zeit ist durch Untersuchungen gefunden worden, daß die Si-Eisen-Kohlenstoff-Legierungen mit hohem Si-Gehalt in festem Zustande Umwandlungen erleiden, die bei schneller Abkühlung (grün gegossen) erst bei verhältnismäßig tiefen Temperaturen eintreten können, und daß ferner der Kohlenstoff auch bei ''hoch siliciumhaltigen Legierungen ursprünglich nicht als lockerer Graphit, sondern als harte, spröde Zementitverbindung vorliegt.
