Description
Process for the preparation of derivatives of nuclear mercured phenols. Complex mercury compounds of the aromatic series, including also of phenols, are in large numbers, especially from D im -r o t h (cf. e.g. Ber. der Dtsch. Chem. Ges., Vol. 35 [igo2], p. 2853). These are mostly difficult to dissolve, salt-like compounds from which the mercury cannot be precipitated by alkalis is.
It has now been found that these sparingly soluble salts of the mercured phenols, such as the halides, sulfates or nitrates of the general formula: by boiling with cyanide can be converted into compounds which are also sparingly soluble in water, but very effective and stable. These mercury compounds of the composition of which representatives up. were not known now, contain the mercury in non-ionized form, they are, so to speak, doubly complex, in contrast to the previously known compounds. When treated with alkalis, they do not split off mercury and are not precipitated by saline solution. With alkali hydroxides they form salts of the general formula that are extremely easily soluble in water: whose solutions can be evaporated without change. This property of the alkali salts, which is of great importance for their technical usability, could not be foreseen, since the previously known salts of mercurated phenols, such as the halides or sulfates, are not stable in dilute alkaline solution, but rather in the alkali salts of the oxyaryl mercury hydroxides are split (cf. Ber. der Dtsch. Chem. Ges., Vol. 35 [19o2]), p. 2854/55) Example. 3 kg of mercury oxide are dissolved in 10 l of water with the addition of sulfuric acid and 1.5 kg of o-cresol are introduced into this solution with vigorous stirring and heating. A precipitate of mercury-o-cresol sulfate separates out after a short time. The precipitate is filtered off with suction and, if possible, while still moist, boiled with a solution of 0.8 kg of cyan sodium and water until it is completely dissolved; the sodium sulfate which separates out of the solution is removed and the solution is evaporated in vacuo. When the concentrated solution cools, the cyanogen mercury compound precipitates and is separated off in a suitable manner.
The new compounds are found particularly in the form of their readily water-soluble Alkali salts for technical and therapeutic purposes use.
