Die Sicherheit jedes Systems, in dem eine solche Chipkarte eingesetzt wird, ist demnach von der Geheimhaltung der PIN abhängig. Die Sicherheit geht beispielsweise dann ver loren, wenn der Karteninhaber in fahrlässiger Weise eine PIN auf der Chipkarte notiert und die Chipkarte anschließend ab handen kommt. Auch das Weitergeben der Chipkarte samt PIN an nahestehende Personen aus Vertretungs- oder Gefälligkeits gründen mindert die Sicherheit des Systems erheblich. Um einem möglichen Mißbrauch vorzubeugen, sind des halb bereits eine Reihe zusätzlicher Sicherheitsbarrieren vor geschlagen worden.
