Die Nadel d ist in der üblichen Weise in Spitzen, aber in einem fest auf dem Gehäuse a angeordneten Bock gelagert, so daß sie dic Bewegungen des Gehäuses a mitmacht. Das magnetische Moment des Systems d ist im Verhältnis zu denn des Hauptmagnetsystems sehr klein, und die beiden Systeme liegen einander verhältnismäßig so nahe, daß der Erdmagnetismus auf das System d keinen nennenswerten Einfluß ausübt, dieses vielmehr alle Bewegungen des Hauptsystems b mitmacht. Praktisch stellt sich demnach das System d genau so ein wie das Hauptsystem, nur daß Nordpol und Südpol gegeneinander vertauscht sind; die Einstellung des Systems d ist daher praktisch unabhängig von der Lage der Ebene, in der es schwingt.
