Description

derselben an.
wirdvIn the case of electrical discharge tubes filled with noble gas and independent discharge, current permeability, critical discharge voltage, cathodic surface density of the discharge, number of layers, characteristics and other electrical parameters are largely dependent on the purity of the noble gas. It has become known that the presence of small amounts of base gases or vapors can act on these variables in the respective favorable sense. The current permeability, which is linearly related to the cathodic surface density of the discharge, is increased by the presence of such additives, and the minimum to which the critical discharge voltage can be reduced under otherwise identical conditions can be approached by correctly dimensioning these additives . The following invention provides a simple means for regulating the gas composition in a noble gas-filled discharge tube and for regulating the current permeability of the same.
The invention is based on the perception that it is difficult to get that state from the start in such a tube! in order to achieve the gas composition which is the right one for the operation of the same. Either the degassing of the electrodes, which are often large in area, or other parts of the 1 vessel takes place only inadequately; if the electrodes continue to operate, gases can then be released which, if the concentration is too high, reduce the conductivity of the tube considerably. If, on the other hand, the electrodes are well degassed, there is a risk that, with a moderate current density, complete occlusion of the additional gas will take place on the electrodes, and that an all too pure noble gas will remain. In addition, there are changes in the vacuum during very long operations due to the effect of cathodic or anodic metal atomization. These can also lead to the noble gas being finally freed from all admixtures of base gases or vapors
To eliminate this deficiency, is according to of the invention next to the two main electrodes of the tube (1 and 2 in the figure) a third electrode 3, a so-called
Auxiliary electrode is provided, which is not used continuously, but only for the following serves the designated purposes. This electrode is made of magnesium, e.g. B. in wire form, or made of another metal, which is magnesium in terms of those which come into consideration for the purpose of the invention Properties is similar. Such metals are z. B. aluminum, calcium and ίο other alkaline earth metals, also all sufficient soft or porous metals such as lead, tin, thallium, cerium, cadmium, and also carbon; provided that these substances in the technically given condition are not directly used to achieve them the same effects can be used as with magnesium, they can still be achieved by a suitable pretreatment can be brought there. These substances have, if you consider them as Electrode, if possible as a cathode, has the property of being noticeable at first Discharge amount of hydrogen and other gases. Once the delivery is over, it begins to sputter the metal at a higher current density. The resulting fogging the wall has the property that the admixtures present in the noble gas completely to tie. In the event of further dusting that takes place after the working electrodes their cathode fall decreases considerably, provided the actual cathode metal is in chemical Respect is nobler. As is well known, the less noble the metal, the smaller the cathode drop behaves.
The invention is based on this property of magnesium or equivalent metals. If the case occurs that the contents of the tube after the manufacture of the same or after shorter or longer use than too pure, d. H. Not enough base gases or vapors as an admixture to the noble gas, it turns out that the still unused auxiliary electrode 3 suffice to develop so much hydrogen that the Gas content has the correct composition again. Conversely, there are too many admixtures accumulated, the electrode 3 will be allowed to sputter with a high current density for some time. Because of this dustiness become not only the initial gases evolved from 3, but also those in the tube Any admixtures contained are easily bound to the desired degree.
It is true that auxiliary electrodes are already in use in X-ray tubes to soften the vacuum that has become hard in the factory by releasing gas. Such electrodes, however, act on one side, while the electrode according to the invention can be used in two ways with very different results. Auxiliary electrodes have also already been used in vacuum fluorescent tubes to clean the gas or to supplement the gas content by releasing gas. In the latter case, however, it is always a question of the development of the gas that is already used as the filling gas itself. Also, as in the invention, the same electrode can never serve to produce two different effects at will. In contrast, the auxiliary electrode which is the subject of the invention has. a dual action, namely their Aufspeicherungsfähigkeit hydrogen or other gases that to improve the \ ^ acuum once due \ r acuum deteriorate, then due to the cleansing effect of their Zerstäubungsprodukte on the gas content of the discharge tube. The use of these two properties makes it possible to regulate the content of the admixtures required in the noble gas tube to achieve certain effects described above, with the same electrode acting at will in one sense or the other, depending on the strength of its load.
So prepared Electrodes have the property of being loaded with a low current density in larger quantities to absorb base gases or vapors under the influence of the discharge. Also because of that the purpose of eliminating an excess of the gases in question can be perfect can be achieved. In this case, it is recommended when making the tube on the pump to degas the large-area auxiliary electrode so far that it is no longer saturated with hydrogen under the prevailing conditions. i ° o
