Description
The invention relates to a method for operating fluorescent tubes with alternating current a particular desired frequency or waveform if only DC or Ordinary alternating current of a usual number of periods is available. According to the invention a discharge tube is connected upstream of the fluorescent tube for the purpose of corresponding conversion of the available current, which the current used to operate the fluorescent tube must pass. The passage of current through this discharge tube, hereinafter referred to as cathode tube, is made by means of electrical, magnetic, optical or mechanical action according to the frequency and waveform of the desired AC current affected. A well-known one is very suitable as a cathode tube highly evacuated tube with hot cathode, in which the control of the continuous Current takes place in a known manner through an auxiliary electrode (grid).
Fig. Ι shows schematically an arrangement of this type for generating a high-frequency alternating current or one with a special curve shape. P 1 and P 2 are the two poles of the inductor or transformer or another power source that supplies the current for the fluorescent tube R. E is the cathode tube which, according to the invention, is intended to change the frequency or waveform of the current passing through the fluorescent tube. In a known way it has an anode A, a hot cathode K and a control electrode S. If the influence of the current through a voltage applied between S and K AC voltage, which on the one in the present example by inductive means of an apparatus for generating electrical oscillations using Transmission tube SR is removed. By varying the capacitance C , the frequency of the current flowing through the transmitter tube can be changed.
In the case of fluorescent tubes, the light output is often improved very significantly through the frequency and curve shape. In particular, a current curve of the shape shown in Fig. 2 at an average current strength or current density, which lies within the limits given by the permissible heating of the arc tube and the electrodes and the permissible energy requirement of the tube, allows; To achieve instantaneous current densities which are far above this average current density and thus allow special lighting effects to be produced. A current curve of this type can be found in the anode current of the cathode; Tube E can be reached very easily by appropriate circuitry, which will not be discussed in more detail, as this is well known from the theory of the amplifier tube for generating vibrations. One can see the Si? also omit and use the tube E itself with a feedback circuit.
