lnetalltnikroskop.
The process of making polished surfaces more opaque
Body, e.g. B. of ores, slag, rocks, metals, etc., in the reflected polarized
It is well known to observe light; however, the application of this procedure is still open
by no means general. Their introduction poses technical difficulties
opposite. The devices introduced so far, e.g. B. use the metal microscope
normal unpolarized light for observation.
For this
Basically, the object tables are consistently not centered with the care as it is for
observation in polarized light is required. 'One can therefore with the
metal microscopes previously used 'do not rotate the stage with the object without,
especially at high magnification, to get out of the optical axis with the object.
When observing in polarized light, however, the color changes or extinctions must be observed
measure when the crystals rotate against the plane of polarization and naturally for this purpose
the objects exactly in the optical axis or in the field of view when rotating
obtain. If one tries, therefore, the observation in polarized light with the known one
Metal microscope, this is how you run into difficulties.
An attempt was first made to overcome these difficulties by
the Nikols were arranged to be rotatable together. Could be a satisfactory solution
this does not cause «-erden, since the plane of polarization of the light when it is reflected
is rotated in the vertical illuminator. Hence the need for analyzer
and polarizer each to rotate separately and the additional rotation of the plane of polarization
to be calibrated in the vertical illuminator by means of empty tests.
This procedure is scientifically feasible, but not
suitable for quick observation and therefore useless for practical metal microscopy.
The invention overcomes the difficulties reported by application
a new principle in metal microscopy, namely the simultaneous application
one and the same Nikolian prism both as a polarizer and as an analyzer.
To achieve this effect, a Nikolsches prism is placed between the vertical illuminator
and object rotatably arranged. The light reaches the from the vertical illuminator

the object. It is reflected by the object and experiences what is peculiar to the object
Influence, be it rotation of the plane of polarization, be it conversion into elliptical
polarized light. Then it goes through the same Nikol again, but this time
in the opposite direction, with the Nikol now serving as an analyzer. With Nikol
A fine observation device can “-erden”, “1e z. B. a Savart platter,
which, since it has the same functions as the polariscope, also in the same way
Way is associated with Nikol. The light coming from Nicholas then brings first
no interference fringes emerge, since the two when the light enters the
The components produced by the plate have the same intensity. Only after the polarization state
of the light has undergone a change due to reflection, the streaks appear
and thus make it possible to observe the influences caused by the object.
The new facility can be seen in the drawing.
The design of the device is extremely simple.
As a vertical illuminator z. B. applied a plane-parallel glass. This one will
connected with the Nikol to form a uniform microscope accessory. The usage
Any metal microscope for observation in polarized light is then through
