Abstract

Impregnation of fibre mats, e.g. cellulose paper etc. for covering materials with high surface strength for coating base boards of all types, e.g. chipboard for use in the furniture industry, involves application of pref. condensable or polymerisable synthetic resins and cure, after which the impregnated intermediate is stored, e.g. in roll form, and/or dispatched, for later permanent bonding to the base board. The novel features are that: (a) the impregnant is prepd. in the form of a highly conc. resin soln. with at least ca. 70% solids; (b) this soln., with a viscosity of 200-2000 mPa.s, is applied to the fibre mat continuously at room temp.; (c) the soln. is applied homogeneously over the entire surface, with narrow tolerances; and (d) the impregnated mat is subjected to heat shock at up to 100 deg.C for relatively short periods w.r.t. the time for complete cure.
