Abstract
(A) Aluminium alloy sheet of predetermined final gauge is produced from an intermediate gauge sheet (requiring 25-71% redn. to achieve final gauge) of a heat treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy, with a content of Mg and available Si lying within a pentagonal area, defined by the coordinates 0.2% Si, 0.4% Mg; 0.26 Si, 0.9% Mg; 0.4% Si, 1.2% Mg; 1.2% Si, 1.2% Mg; and 1.2% Si, 0.4% Mg,on a graph of % Mg against % available Si, by (i) soln. heat treating and quenching; (ii) naturally ageing for at least 1 day; (iii) cold rolling to final gauge; and (iv) artificially ageing, for yield strength increase, at a predetermined temp. beginning at time to and ending at time t1 under conditions such that max. attainable yield strength requires heating until time t2 later than t1 and max. attainable % elongation is achieved at time t1. (v) Heating in step (iv) is continued at least until t, and terminated prior to t2 so that the % elongation value of the product is within 20% of the max.% elongation value.
