Zur Prüfung auf Dichtigkeit füllte man früher die Hohlräume der Gußkörper mit Flüssigkeit, Luft oder Gas, welches unter Druck gesetzt wurde, was j e nach Zweckmäßigkeit entweder beim Rohgußstück oder nach teilweiser oder abgeschlossener Bearbeitung stattfinden konnte. Später ging -man dazu über, dem Druckmittel irgendeinen Stoff beizumengen, um mit dem Abpressen gleichzeitig eine Abdichtung der Poren oder blasigen Stellen zu bewirken.
