The known isomerisation of cresols (I) using a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst (II) is improved by effecting the isomerisation in the presence of H2 in mol. ratio H2:(I)=1-10:1. Is at 250-450 esp. 325-400 deg.C./2-75 esp. 15-60 atmos. with mol. ratio H2:(I) = 2-6:1, and liq. hourly space velocity 0.1-6 esp. 1-3 per hr. (II) pref. has constraint index 1-12, and is in an acid-acting form. Isomerisation of o-(I) give p- and m-(I); isomerisation of m-(I) gives o-(I) and mainly p-(I).
