Abstract

An improved aqueous acidic cleaning composition for cleaning aluminium surfaces, particularly aluminium beverage containers to enhance the flavour characteristics of the beverages subsequently packaged therein, contains a solution soluble fluoride containing compound, a solution soluble boron containing compound, optionally but preferably one or a combination of surfactants, and hydrogen ions to provide a pH of less than about 3.5, the concentration of boron ions is sufficient to provide a stoichiometric excess relative to the free-fluoride ions present of that required to form the anion BF4<->. The cleaning solution may also contain a surfactant.
