Abstract

Low rank coal (I) is beneficiated by (a) mixing with a surface treating mixt. (II) comprising water, a polymerisable monomer (M), a polymerisation catalyst (C) and a coal-derived oil (L); and (b) recovering beneficiated coal. Pref. (I) is bituminous, sub-bituminous coal, lignite or peat and it is pulverised in water to form a slurry of coal:water wt. ratio e.g. 1:3. (M) is an unsatd. acid, e.g. oleic acid, or ester thereof in an amt. 0.02-0.1 wt.% based on I; esp. corn oil; (C) is a peroxide or azo cpd., 10-200 ppm based on (I); it may be employed with an initiator, e.g. a copper salt; hydrogen peroxide+copper nitrate is esp. suitable. (L) is crude coal tar, tar acids, tar bases, naphtha, creosote and/or pitch, 2-3 wt.% based on (I). A further liq. carrier, e.g. a fuel oil, may be present in (II) at 0.5-5 wt.% based on (I). Conditioning agent (dispersants, surfactants or wetting agents) may also be present, e.g. sodium carbonate and/or sodium pyrophosphate.
