Abstract
A ceramic fibre blanket is prepd. by (a) preparing a laminar pile of ceramic fibres contg. 35-65 wt.% Al2O3, 35-65% SiO2 and less than 10 wt.% another metal oxide, and a lubricant; (b) superimposing a web of organic fibres on one or both sides of the pile; and (c) punching the resulting assembly with barbed needles, pref. using 50-200 barbed needles/cm2. The organic fibres allow a higher density of punching needles to be used, even in thin blankets (less than 5mm), without damage. The resulting blankets have much higher tensile strength, e.g. 1.5 kg/cm2 for blanket only 2.4mm thick, punched with 150 needles/cm3. Without the organic webs, fewer needles can be used, and max. tensile strength of a 6mm thick blanket was 0.35kg/cm2, attained using 20 needles. The organic fibres may be removed by incineration with the lubricant, or may be left in situ.
