Description
Method of treating pumice stone as an aggregate for lightweight concrete. Ordinary cement concrete is too heavy to be used as a shipbuilding material. Man has therefore tried a lighter material, namely pumice stone, instead of Mix sand and gravel with cement. Pumice stone is suitable according to its structure good as an aggregate for shipbuilding material, as it is despite its high porosity absorbs water only to an insignificant extent. It has been shown, however, that he too brittle and fragile to be used as a substitute for sand and gravel.
However, by treating it in the manner outlined below, the pumice stone can such a change that he turned into a very strong and thus a material that is excellently suited to the production of lightweight concrete is transformed.
The method of treatment is that the pumice stone first to of a size suitable for various uses, e.g. B. how Crushed stone, gravel, or sand, and then put in an oven up to a temperature of about 100 degrees Temperature is heated. The crushed pumice stone can be especially used heat from rotary kilns very quickly. As the temperature rises, greater occurs Hardening in that there is a contraction in the mass and at the same time close the outer open pores. This creates a very hard and sharp-edged one Surface. When the temperature reaches around the melting point, the individual Pieces solid and hard like glass, but inside are porous, so that the specific Weight about 40 percent less than ordinary with a reasonable grain size Sand, and at a slightly lower temperature even less. The pumice stone can also, at first roughly broken and in larger pieces, similar to gravel and gravel, burned and then further crushed.
It is always essential that superficial glazing is achieved by heating of the pumice stone is brought about by which strength is created without the porosity is destroyed. The firing temperature must be set according to this effect. If necessary, it can also be below 100 ° or, on the other hand, for the purpose of the fire can be carried out faster, and can be annealed much higher for a short time. It takes not to be fired to melt, but sintering is sufficient.
