Weiterhin sind speziell« Zeichensätze bekannt, diemit einfachen Hilfsmitteln maschinell gelesen werden können und als Warenauszeichnungssystem verbreitet sind (sog. Balkencodes). Diese Zeichensätze werden auf Papier oder einen anderen Träger aufgebracht und danach nicht mehr verändert. Der technische Aufwand für die optischen Belegleser ist sehr hoch, aber der Zeichensatz ist auch noch vom Menschen lesbar.
