Description
Process for the catalytic reduction of organic compounds with the help of nickel carbonyl. It is known that organic compounds hydrogenate can be made by treating them with hydrogen gas in the presence of catalytic substances heated, one of which is metallic nickel, nickel oxide and organic nickel salts have proven particularly suitable. It is common to use the finely divided metal or to mix the metal I compounds intimately with the substance to be treated and then hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gases come into contact with the mixture bring.
The invention consists in that the substance to be hydrogenated is exposed to the action of hydrogen or another hydrogenating agent, e.g. B. * subjected to a hydrogen-containing gas or a suitable, easily decomposable hydrogen compound at a suitable temperature in the presence of nickel carbonyl, which is decomposed at this temperature with the release of metal and which is continuously renewed by adding fresh amounts of #% during the entire duration of the action of hydrogen will. For example, a mixture of hydrogen and nickel carbonyl can be brought into contact with the substance under suitable temperature and pressure conditions. will. So 'it has been found that a large number of substances can be hydrogenated by treating them at elevated temperature with hydrogen, to which nickel carbonyl or a gas containing nickel carbonyl has been added beforehand, or with a mixture of gases containing hydrogen in which nickel carbonyl was formed by combining carbon oxide, which was contained in the mixture from the beginning, with nickel:
It has already been suggested as a finely divided catalyst Use nickel by decomposing nickel carbonyl before introduction of the hydrogenating gas has been precipitated in the heated mass. It could the formation and supply of nickel carbonyl done so that carbon oxide or a carbon oxide-containing gas mixture passed in a known manner over reduced nickel, and then into the liquid heated above the dissociation temperature of the nickel carbonyl was initiated until one to the subsequent hydrogenation. sufficient: sufficient Amount of nickel was accumulated. The only purpose of using nickel carbonyl was to to generate metallic nickel in the liquid to be hydrogenated as a catalyst, however, when using water gas as a generator and carrier of the nickel carbonyl in this case no practically useful hydrogenation.
It has now been found that nickel carbonyl at the moment decomposition is a far better catalyst than decomposition formed and solidified metal.
The hydrogenation therefore proceeds much easier and faster if nickel carbofiyl and hydrogen or a gas mixture containing sufficient hydrogen are fed to the reaction mixture at the same time and for the entire duration of the hydrogenation at a suitable temperature. The amount of each supplied nickel carbonyl may be adjusted while at the same time the entering amount of hydrogen and are known as precisely dosed on the amount of Hydrierungsgutes according to requirements both with respect to this. However, in the presence of a sufficient amount of hydrogen, the required amount of catalyst is present at the moment of decomposition, whereas in the known process the hydrogenation does not take place until after the nickel has been deposited. An admixture of catalyst metal or a metal compound to the material before the hydrogenation is unnecessary in the new process, and the amount of nickel carbonyl added during the entire duration of the hydrogenation is only a fraction. the amounts of catalyst required in the known processes.
Another advantage is that the inactivation of the catalyst, which occurs easily in the known hydrogenation processes, has no effect, since new catalyst is constantly being added. Furthermore, the nickel precipitated in the hydrogenation material can be added directly to the nickel volatilizer after mechanical separation has taken place, whereas in the known processes which do not use nickel carbonyl, the reactivation of the catalyst requires laborious and costly chemical treatment. Furthermore, as is known, the metal used to form nickel carbonyl need not be of particularly pure nature, and since it is used outside the reaction races, it can be made from mixtures of nickel with other metals, e.g. B. Copper exist, as they are obtained in the processing - of 'nickel ores.
The invention can be carried out in various ways. It is useful to introduce nickel carbonyl into the hydrogen gas by passing a mixture of the latter with carbon oxide over reduced nickel in the manner well known for the preparation of nickel carbonyl, the nickel of course not needing to be a pure metal; rather, a mixture containing nickel, as is commonly used in the technical preparation of nickel carbonyl, can be used. The gas mixture does not need to be of great purity and can be produced from water gas or by thermal decomposition of hard coal gas or coke oven gas, or of hydrocarbons of any kind. It has been found, however, that the best results are obtained when the carbon dioxide content of the gases is limited to that required for the formation of the nickel carbonyl necessary for the reaction, and in any case the carbon oxide content should not exceed about 25 percent .
If, for example, an oil or a fatty acid is to be hydrogenated, the simplest procedure is to first pass hydrogen containing 5 to 10 percent carbon oxide through a device which is charged with reduced nickel in a known manner, and then through the in a closed vessel heated to a suitable temperature . The gases escaping from the vessel are returned to the volatilizing device for reuse, with hydrogen or a hydrogen-rich gas being supplied to replace the amount absorbed by the oil. The amount of nickel carbonyl required for the hydrogenation is only small. Under suitable conditions, excellent results can be obtained with an amount of nickel carbonyl corresponding to 0.1 part nickel per 100 parts oil. The process is ended when a sample of the oil has the desired solidification point, the desired iodine count or other properties.
Another mode of operation consists in injecting the substance to be treated, if it is in liquid form, through atomizing nozzles into a gas-tight vessel which is suitably heated to the temperature most suitable for the catalytic hydrogenation of the substance. Hydrogen gas containing nickel carbonyl is introduced into the same container, preferably at or near the bottom, under a suitable pressure. The excess of gases verlgßt the vessel through an outlet opening in the upper part and can- in the gas circuit Retired 'results, after the products have been entrained excreted by condensation or washing. The treated liquid can be withdrawn and returned to the reaction vessel until the hydrogenation has gone far enough. advanced -is. Instead of heating the reaction vessel or in addition to such heating, the liquid can be used. The liquid must be preheated to a temperature required for the reaction in a suitable device before it enters the vessel.
. You can also work in such a way that the oil to be hydrogenated is allowed to drip through a tube which is filled, for example, with glass beads or pumice stone and heated to the required temperature, while at the same time hydrogen containing nickel carbonyl is passed through the tube. Under these conditions the oil drips in a hydrogenated state from the lower end of the tube without taking any amounts of nickel with it. Filtration -is thus not necessary, as never a real mixture of nickel and 01 is obtained, but the nickel ledi #; - 'Lich deposited within the tube in the heated surfaces. The action proceeds extremely rapidly, so that one 01 with a length of the tube of about 5o can let pass cm within 2 to '3 minutes, the.
In * another embodiment of the invention, a solution of nickel carbonyl in the substance to be treated is prepared, for example by the nickel carbonyl-containing gases.'by the cold substance *, z. B. an oil, passes through. The solution of metal carbonyl prepared in this way in the substance to be treated is injected through an atomizing nozzle into a heated vessel in which it encounters hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gases, whereupon hydrogenation easily occurs.
When the compound to be treated is in gas, vapor or light form is evaporable, for example in the hydrogenation of the more volatile tar oils, such as of benzene and its derivatives, it will simply contain oil with the 1-nickel carl) on #% Hydrogen mixed in a suitable manner and the mixture used for hydrogenation subjected to the required temperature.
- In the case of less volatile substances, the steam may have to be mixed with the hydrogenating gases at an elevated temperature. For example, nitrobenzene is evaporated at 200 'C in a hydrogen stream and the nitrobenzene hydrogen mixture together with nickel carbonyl-containing hydrogen is passed through a tube heated to 25o' C , with reduction to aniline, which is obtained by condensation. After the aniline formed has been separated from unchanged nitrobenzene, it is returned to the evaporator. -
