Die eine Spule der Differentialelektromagnete h wird vom Strom der zur Elektrode c gehörenden Phase v und die andere Spule vom Strom der eigenen Phase durchflossen. Wird die Elektrode c mittels Servomotors und Steuerkolbens g von ihrer Gegenelektrode b entfernt, so nimmt der Strom der Phase v stärker ab als derjenige der Phasen u und w. Seine Wirkung in den Differentialelektromagneten h wird von derjenigen der betreffenden Phasenströme überwogen. Infolgedessen werden die Servomotore der Phasen u und w durch ihre Steuerkolben so beeinflußt, daß die daranhängenden Elektroden so lange voneinander entfernt werden, bis die Ströme aller Phasen wieder gleich stark geworden sind.
