Abstract

The LCD appts. includes a programmable semiconductor device and a driving circuit connected between the semiconductor device and a liq. crystal display so that the visual presentation of the display is controlled by the semiconductor device. A control circuit is connected to the semiconductor device for varying the signals from the device to the display so that the display changes from one visual presentation to another so that an animated display can be achieved. A second programmable semiconductor device may also be provided with its output fed to a speech or a tone generator so that audio signals are produced in synchronism with the changing visual display. The control circuit, semiconductor devices and driving circuit are pref. formed by a CMOS integrated circuit which may be combined with the display and a power source in one unit e.g. a digital watch.
