Abstract

The process produces liquid nitrogen using the refrigerating action resulting from evaporation of liquid oxygen. The liquid oxygen is fed externally into the base of a low pressure column of a two-column unit, for air decomposition, where it evaporates in a main condenser under the action of the condensing nitrogen in a medium-pressure column. The nitrogen is collected below the main condenser, and drawn off as the product. The gaseous nitrogen can be drawn off from the head of the medium-pressure column, expanded to produce output, and brought into heat-exchange contact with the air to be decomposed.
