1 technical area

This invention comes from the field of "accessories for watercraft".

2)State of the art

The piece of ship equipment presented here is a very old accessory.
Lips have been around for a long time. They are used to redirect lines to fixed points on the boat. Lips are attached to the bow (one each on the left and right in the direction of travel) and to both sides of the stern. They are part of a system consisting of
a) cleat, b) lip and c) rope, for explanation see Fig. 7.

As is easy to see, the line must be inserted into the lip. Figure 4 shows a common variant. Since the line can most easily jump out of this lip, there is a laterally offset variant, shown in Figure 5. Here the rope is inserted twisted 45° to the length of the lip.
As can be seen from the sketch, there is still an opening at the top. Although it is not as large as the lip in Fig. 4, it is still large enough for the rope to jump out if the angle of the rope changes.

Here, only the design shown in Fig. 3a provides protection: the closed form.
The biggest disadvantage here is also the biggest advantage: the shape. Positive: The rope is guided safely and cannot slip out. Negative: It is very laborious to guide several meters of rope through the small opening and then reel it in again later.

The corner lip was developed for the rear (stern) side of the ship (Fig. 6). This also has a large upper opening for inserting the rope and is only suitable if the rope is deflected in the lip by about 90°, and as horizontally as possible.

3)The problem underlying the invention

As described above, the rope is redirected through the lip. To avoid having to lead the rope through a closed shape (ring), there is the half-open shape of the lip.

However, there is often the problem that the rope jumps out of the lip when the angle of pull of the rope changes. This happens more often than you might think, for example in tidal ports, when mooring to other boats, etc.

In particular, today's lips are not suitable for steeper pull angles, ie pull angles directed upwards from the boat.
This requires a lip that

a) is closed on all sides and

b) where the rope can be easily inserted.

These two contradictory points must be combined in one product.

5) Commercial use

As can be seen from the explanations of points 2 and 3, there is currently no reliable solution to the problems mentioned. In the absence of a better alternative, the conventional lips are built, sold and used.

This is now different.

The lip presented here is easy and inexpensive to produce, stable, looks good and is highly functional.

Nothing now stands in the way of a successful sale.

Similar to traditional lips, several sizes should be made.

6 Word-partial effect

The lip presented here has the following advantages:

a) Easy insertion of the rope,

b) Advantageous form

c) No risk of injury due to closed form

d) The rope does not release itself from the lip,

e) Safe operation even at steep, upward pulling angles.

7) A way of carrying out the invention

a) Components:

1 base plate, stainless steel 6 mm, 95 x 70 mm

2 brackets, stainless steel, 15 x 6 x 65 mm

b) Practical production

The base plate is cut out of stainless steel. Two holes for 8 mm countersunk screws must be drilled, see drawing 2 for positions.

Now the first stainless steel bracket is made from 6 mm material. A 65 mm long and 15 mm wide strip is bent over a 25 mm diameter tube so that it is 25 mm "high" in total (internal clear height from the base part). The upper end and the edges are ground round.

The other stainless steel bracket is manufactured in the same way.

Now both brackets can be welded according to the position in drawing 2.

8) How it works

The rope is taken in both hands, placed in the middle between the brackets on the base plate as shown in Fig. 2 and guided to the right in a clockwise direction. This puts the rope under both brackets until it stops at the side, see Fig. 3.
Now the rope can no longer slip out.

4)Protection claims Main claim: The invention is characterized by: ·- a logically opposing fastening of two right-angled bracket on a base plate.
·- a lateral direct distance and internal clear height of the brackets equal to twice the diameter of the most commonly used linen,
·- a laterally overlapping assembly of the brackets in such a way that each horizontal part reaches to the vertical fastening of the other part.
