The invention relates to a table with a table top that can be pivoted about a horizontal axis from a substantially vertical storage position into a substantially horizontal use position, with support legs that can be folded about vertical axes to support the table top in a use position.

Such a folding table is generally known in the form of an English design. In the storage position, the folding table takes up a small footprint, with a table top pivoted on two opposite edges of a small-format table top. Two diagonally opposite table legs, which are pivoted on a bar in the middle of the edge of the fixed table top, can be folded out by 90 degrees to support the table top in the horizontal position. Optionally, one or both of the side pivoting plates can be brought into the horizontal position for use.

The disadvantage of this well-known folding table is that even when it is stored, the middle plate remains in its horizontal position, so that its space requirement cannot be reduced any further. However, especially in smaller apartments, there is a need to provide additional work surfaces in the form of tables for a short time for any activities that can be stowed away again after the activity has been completed with minimal space requirement.

The object of the invention is therefore to provide a folding table which can be conveniently and easily folded from its storage position into a position for use with minimal space requirements.

This task is solved in a folding table of this type in that the vertical folding axes of the legs span an imaginary plane to which the horizontal pivot axis of the table top is arranged parallel. Unlike in the prior art, in which there are two horizontal and spaced apart pivot axes for the two hinged table tops, here according to the invention only one pivot axis is provided for the table top. The two pivot axes for the fold-out legs span an imaginary plane in which the pivot axis of the table top also practically lies. This allows all pivotable parts to be brought into planes parallel to one another, so that the folding table requires very little space when stored.

The vertical folding axes of the front legs are connected to one another by a rear cross member. The bearings for the fold-out legs are attached to this rear cross member. The other two legs can be attached to this rear cross member.

It is advantageous, however, to connect two side legs by means of an upper crossbar. In particular, with the design that two side legs (3, 4) are connected to a frame (10) and/or plate by means of a lower crossbar (6), a particularly robust and strong construction of the foldable parts is achieved, which does not become soft at the joints even after many years of use.

For the table top, the rear cross member is provided with bearings that determine the horizontal pivot axis of the top.

If the table top is arranged at a distance from the horizontal pivot axis and/or the horizontal pivot axis is arranged at a distance from the imaginary plane of the folding axes, there is still enough space between the table top and the rear cross member when the folding table is in storage to accommodate the folded legs.

After unfolding, for which you would like to have a little more space available, the folding table can be easily moved to its place of use because the frame or the plate of the side legs has wheels.

The strength of the construction is also further improved by the fact that the rear cross member is designed as a frame or plate.

If the depth of the side crossbar is equal to or less than half the length of the rear crossbar, there is still enough space between the folded table legs in the middle to be able to grasp the lower edge of the folded-down table top with your hand for transport. This makes transporting the table in the folded-down state particularly convenient.

An unintentional folding of the side legs is prevented by the fact that the plate has a locking mechanism on each upper cross member that acts in a horizontal direction to secure the upper side cross member in the unfolded position.

Optionally, two positions of the plate can be set, if the plate has a first locking mechanism acting in the vertical direction, in which the plate is arranged horizontally and the

A simple but effective and safe locking mechanism can be achieved if the locking mechanism is designed as a pivoting bar with a groove recessed in the vertical direction and/or a groove recessed in the horizontal direction.

The lower crossbar of the folded legs comes into an operative relationship with the aforementioned locking mechanism if the pivoting bar is arranged on the underside of the plate and the lateral upper crossbars have locking surfaces that are adapted to the locking groove.

In Figure 1, 1 designates the folding table according to the invention. It essentially consists of the worktop 2, which is supported by two rear legs 3 and two front legs 4. Two side legs 3, 4 are connected by an upper crossbar 5. In addition, the side legs 3, 4 are each stiffened by a lower crossbar 6 to form a frame 10, which also acts as a plate when a filling is inserted. To make it easier to move, rollers 7 are attached below the lower crossbar.

In addition, the folding table is stiffened by a rear frame 8 in a plane perpendicular to the side legs 4, 5 and to the level of the worktop 2. The frame 8 and the rear cross member 14 form a unit.

In the working position, a chair can be easily pushed between the front legs 4. This working side is therefore referred to as the front side, while the frame 8 is arranged on the rear side of the table.

Figure 2, which shows a view from below, shows the position of two folding axes 9 around which the frame can be folded in the direction of the arrow 11. The position of the folding axis 9 is determined by the hinges 12, 13 visible in Figure 3. The hinges are connected to a rear cross member 14, which forms part of the frame 8. In this context, the frame 8" therefore acts as a rear cross member 14.

The table top 2 itself is spaced from the pivot axis 15 so that when the worktop 2 is pivoted down in the direction of the arrow 17, the pivoted side frames 10 find space between the worktop 2 and the frame 8. The pivot axis of the plate 2 is determined by the bearings 20 (Figure 7) which connect the plate to the rear cross member 14. The folded state is shown in Figure 7.

The horizontal position of the worktop 2 in Figure 5 is referred to as the writing position, while the slightly inclined position of the worktop 2 shown in Figure 6 is referred to as the reading position.

These two positions can be achieved by providing a pivoting bar underneath the plate 2 for locking. This bar 18 is attached to the worktop 2 by means of a screw 23 (Figure 7) so that it can pivot about an axis. At its end it has a vertical groove 21 (Figure 7) which can enclose the front end of the upper cross member 5. In this position the upper writing plate assumes the position shown in Figure 6.

The upper cross member 5 is thus locked in its unfolded position.

In addition, the beam 18 has a horizontal groove 22 (Figure 7), which can also encompass the upper crossbeam 5. In this position of the crossbeam, which is shown in Figure 5, the worktop is supported on the crossbeam 5 via the crossbeam 18 and assumes the horizontal writing position. In this way, a table is created that requires very little space in its storage position and can be easily moved into a working position where a choice can be made between two angle positions.
