Description
BESCHREIBUNG *··**··* .:..:.. ..* &iacgr;DESCRIPTION *··**··* .:..:.. ..* &iacgr;
The invention relates to a housing for accommodating electronic components and continuously motor-driven units with one or more metal cages to which one or more hard disks or other components comprising a drive motor are attached.
To operate a personal computer, for example, a so-called calculator is usually used, in which a hard disk, a calculator, a floppy disk drive and other components are housed in a cuboid-shaped housing. Fans are usually built into such a housing, which maintain an air flow through the housing during computer operation in order to cool the electronic and mechanical components contained in the housing.
The noise produced by such a computer is often perceived as unpleasant. As far as the noise comes from the fans, it is in the middle frequency range and is therefore less disturbing than the high-frequency sound emitted by the computer. The high-frequency sound, whose frequency can extend up to 16 kHz, comes mainly from the drive motor for the built-in hard drive, which is driven at very high speed by the drive motor. Although the high-frequency sound emitted by the casing and through cooling air flow openings only has a relatively low amplitude, it is disturbing because of its constant presence, and even more so when several computers with corresponding noise emissions are set up in a room (e.g. open-plan office). In this room there is a constant high-pitched whistling sound, which continually impairs the health and work efficiency of those working in the room.
There are already solutions for soundproofing computer cases, as published in an article in PC-Professionell, September 97 (see appendix). In this version, the case is lined with cork-rubber mats and the hard drive is suspended freely with rubber rings to achieve quiet operation.
Cork rubber is partly a natural product and therefore very expensive to mass produce. Furthermore, cork is a highly flammable material and therefore rather unsuitable for use in electrical devices. Freely suspending a hard drive in rubber rings does indeed provide optimal structure-borne sound insulation but has significant disadvantages. A freely suspended hard drive tends to vibrate when the read head accesses the device, which affects the positioning times of the read head and thus affects the hard drive's performance. Every hard drive manufacturer therefore specifies that the hard drive must be installed in a stable manner. A freely suspended hard drive can only be cooled with a fan. If this fails, thermal self-destruction is inevitable for high-performance hard drives.
The invention is therefore based on the object of providing measures on a computer of the type described above to suppress the noise radiation as much as possible while taking into account the manufacturer's installation instructions for hard drives and at the same time to provide measures which prevent thermal self-destruction of the hard drive in the event of a failure of the hard drive fan without disrupting the ongoing operation of the computer.
The basic principle of the invention is the decoupling of the structure-borne noise of all components installed in the computer that are relevant for noise generation and are constantly in contact with the engine from the common chassis.
For this purpose, the invention provides for the housing mentioned at the beginning to have a vibration-damping band between the hard drive and the hard drive cage, which band has a high level of damping for high-frequency vibrations, and for fastening elements that engage in the disk to be supported on the hard drive cage via vibration-damping supports. This means that high-frequency noise emanating from the hard drive cage and the housing connected to it is so strongly dampened that the usual high-pitched whistling sound is barely perceptible when the computer is in operation. The supports that can be used are primarily hard rubber disks, onto which washers made of metal, for example, are attached. This means that the assembly is almost completely insulated from the hard drive cage with regard to structure-borne noise. Furthermore, according to the invention, the hard drive cage explained above is mounted completely separately on a carrier plate. A stiffening plate is also attached to stabilize the front plate. A carrier plate vibration damper is placed between the carrier plate and the stiffening plate, which is suitable for damping low frequencies. The fastening elements that engage in the carrier plate are also supported by vibration-damping pads on the front plate. This means that low-frequency vibrations emanating from the hard drive and the hard drive cage connected to it are dampened to such an extent that the usual humming and trilling noises are barely perceptible when the computer is in operation. Consequently, the hard drive fan described below, which is attached to the hard drive cage described above, must be supported on the hard drive cage by vibration-damping pads.
If the vibration-damping band according to a further development of the invention also has good thermal conductivity, good heat dissipation to the hard drive cage is achieved at the same time as the vibration damping. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, cooling elements are attached to an external wall of the hard drive cage. These cooling elements are expediently arranged in the cooling air flow generated by the main fan and the variable fan.
Hard drives for which the manufacturer specifies forced ventilation are cooled by their own fan to prevent thermal self-destruction. The invention ensures that if the hard drive fan fails, heat is dissipated by the thermal coupling of the heat-conductive, vibration-damping band across the hard drive cage with the cooling element in the air flow. In addition, a thermal sensor is attached to the outer wall of the hard drive cage under the hard drive fan. This regulates the increase in the speed of the variable fan on the front panel, especially if the hard drive fan fails. These measures limit the rise in temperature of the hard drive and at the same time ensure a redundant cooling system for the entire computer.
Das silikongummiertes Isoliermaterial besitzt zweckmäßig eine Wärmeleitfähigkeit von etwa 0,0029 cal/cm s 0C.For use within the scope of the invention, a silicone-rubberized insulating material that has a hardness of about 75 shore A has proven particularly suitable as a thermally conductive, vibration-damping tape. A material thickness of 0.3 mm is usually sufficient. The silicone-rubberized insulating material expediently has a thermal conductivity of about 0.0029 cal/cm s 0 C.
To retrofit housings of the type mentioned*, kits are recommended that include a vibration-damping band with high damping against high-frequency structure-borne noise, a support bar vibration damper with high damping against low-frequency vibrations and, if necessary, vibration-damping pads along with suitable fastening screws. Further embodiments of the invention are specified in the subclaims.

Der Käfig 29 enthält eine Floppydisk-Aufnahme mit eingebauter Floppy-disk 45.The "square housing" made of standard sheet metal, designated as a whole with 1, has a framework 2, to the front of which a front panel 3 with operating elements (not shown) and a base plate 4 are attached. A main fan 5 is installed in the rear upper part of the housing, which blows the internal air out of the housing 1 through a power supply 53 and further through slots 7 in the rear wall 6. The variable fan 9, which is installed in the lower part of the front panel 3, sucks in the external air through slots (not shown) in the front panel 3 and blows it into the interior of the housing 1. Due to the arrangement of the main fan 5 and the variable fan 9, the cooling air flow is directed approximately diagonally through the interior of the housing 1. The cage 29 contains a floppy disk holder with a built-in floppy disk 45.
A hard disk cage 10, consisting of two opposite side walls 12, 14 and a base plate 16, is attached to the support plate 50 by means of welding points, in which a hard disk 20 is attached between the two side walls 12, 14 by means of screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown). The hard disk 20 includes a drive (not shown) which brings it to the usual high speeds of up to about 10,000 rpm. The cooling fins 18, the thermal sensor 41 and the hard disk fan 40 are attached to the hard disk cage 10. The hard disk cage 10, together with all the components explained above, is attached to the front plate 3 via the support plate 50 by means of screws 23, 25 and 27. The stiffening plate 52 is firmly connected to the front panel 3 by welding points to stabilize it. A support bar vibration damper 51 is placed between the stiffening plate 52 and the support bar 50.
As can be seen in particular from Fig. 3, a wide vibration-damping band 30 is interposed between the hard disk 20 and the hard disk cage 10 on all sides, i.e. along the two side walls 12, 14 and along the support bar 50. The width of the vibration-damping band extends essentially over the entire width of the hard disk 20 and separates it from the hard disk cage 10 in terms of structure-borne noise, in particular at the points where the hard disk 20 is attached to the side walls 12, 14 with the screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown).
The vibration-damping tape 30 consists of a silicone-rubber-coated insulating material with a thickness of about 0.3 mm and a hardness of about 75 shore A. The vibration-damping tape therefore has excellent acoustic damping properties, especially in the high-frequency vibration range.
The surface of the support bar vibration damper 51 extends essentially over the entire surface of the support bar 50 and separates it from the front plate 3 with stiffening plate 52 in terms of structure-borne sound.
The carrier φ slat vibration damper 51 is made of a semi-elastic, soft material that is approximately 4-6 mm thick. The carrier φ slat vibration damper 51 therefore has excellent acoustic damping properties, especially in the low-frequency vibration range.
For complete physical separation of the hard disk 20 from the hard disk cage 10, the fastening screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown) are supported on the hard disk cage 10 via vibration-damping rubber pads 22, 32, 34, 36, 38, 31 (not shown), all of which are identical and of which the pad 32 is shown in detail in Figures 5 and 6. The pad 32 consists of a hard rubber disk 33 with a hardness of approximately 60 shore A, the diameter of which is larger than the diameter of the hole in the side wall 12, 14. A central projection 37 protrudes from one surface of the disk and extends into the hole in the side wall 12, 14. The disk 33 is provided with a through hole 35 in the middle for one of the screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown). A metal washer 39 is glued to the top of the disk 33, on which the head of the screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 rests, while the shaft of the screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown) extends through the hole 35 and engages the hard disk 20 without touching the side wall 12, 14. The hard rubber disk 33 with the projection 37 acoustically decouples the fastening screws 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 (not shown) from the hard disk cage 10.
According to the principle explained above, the fastening screws 23, 25, 27 are also supported by the vibration-damping rubber pads 24, 26, 28 of the front plate 3. This also leads to complete separation of the structure-borne sound between the carrier plate 50 and the front plate 3 with the stiffening plate 52.
These measures prevent structure-borne noise from the hard drive 20 from being transferred to the hard drive cage 10 and thus to the entire housing 1 to any significant extent. This applies in particular to the high-frequency component mentioned but also to the low-frequency component of the vibrations emanating from the hard drive 20.
Further sound insulation is achieved if the three-sided cover 8 of the housing 1 according to Fig. 4 is at least partially lined on the inside with sound-insulating composite material panels 46, 47, 48, 49, each of which consists of a layer of bitumen, a layer of foam and a layer of polyurethane. A further sheet-weighted bitumen panel 43 is applied to the base panel 4 according to Fig. 1.
Tests with the housing equipped according to the invention including cover 8 have shown that when the housing is equipped with 3 fans (supplier: Papst) and a Seagate Cheetah hard drive (10,000 rpm) at a distance of half a meter in front of the front panel of the closed housing, a resting noise of approx. 36 dBA and a maximum operating noise of 40 dBA with continuous access to the hard drive and CD-ROM drive simultaneously can be measured.
The above-mentioned silicone-rubber-coated insulating material used as a vibration-damping band also has good thermal conductivity properties, as is evident from its thermal conductivity of approximately 0.0029 cal/cm s 0 C. The silicone-rubber-coated insulating material therefore not only acts as an excellent damping agent for high-frequency structure-borne noise, but also as an additional heat dissipation from the hard disk 20 to the hard disk cage 10.
As a further cooling measure, several cooling fins, designated as a whole by 18, are attached to the base plate 16 of the two cage sides 12, 14 in a way that conducts heat well, for example by means of thermally conductive adhesive. The cooling fins 18 are located, as shown in particular in Fig. 1, in the diagonal cooling air flow from the main fan 5 to the variable fan 9 with the mentioned inlet openings on the underside of the front plate 3 and the mentioned outlet slots 7 on the rear wall 6. The cooling fins 18 therefore contribute significantly to the heat dissipation of the hard disk 20. A thermal sensor 41 with thermally conductive adhesive is attached to the side wall 12 of the hard disk cage 10 below the hard disk fan 40. This thermal sensor 41 regulates the speed of the variable fan 9 in such a way that if the temperature on the side wall 12 exceeds 40 0 C, the speed of the variable fan 9 is increased steadily as the temperature rises. These measures provide thermal protection for the hard disk 20, especially if the hard disk fan 40 fails.
The hard disk fan 40 is attached to the cage side wall 12, which according to Fig. 1 is closest to the cooling air flow inlet in the front panel 3. The hard disk fan 40 directs air sucked in from the interior of the housing 1 to the hard disk 20 through an opening 42 in the side wall 12. As Fig. 3 in particular shows, the hard disk fan 40 is attached to the side wall 12 via sound-absorbing hard rubber pads 44, which are constructed similarly to that shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and which in turn acoustically decouple the hard disk fan 40 from the side wall 12. As shown in particular in Fig. 1, a floppy drive 45 is located above the hard disk 20 in the cage 29, so that a shaft is formed around the hard disk 20 in the hard disk cage 10 in connection with the base plate 16 and the cooling air flow generated by the hard disk fan 40 is thereby separated from the ventilation of the housing 1.
