Description

The invention relates to a feed, in particular for pigeons. Originally, pigeons were kept primarily as a source of food. The pigeons were only fed a small amount and, thanks to the free flight, had the opportunity to find all the vital nutrients in the fields and meadows.

Since today's pigeons, especially when kept by breeders in Germany for show purposes and flight competitions, have a high sentimental value, they are rarely allowed to fly freely and the pigeons are instead kept in aviaries. The high losses due to

Predatory animals, birds of prey, road traffic, etc. are avoided in this way, but the feeding of the pigeons must now be adapted to the new circumstances. The pigeons no longer have any way of meeting their nutritional needs other than from the food that is made available to them.

Up to now, pigeons have mainly been fed grain mixtures, as extruded products, such as those commonly used in other pets, should not be fed exclusively to pigeons due to their gizzards. At least a portion of the food (approx. 50%) should consist of whole grains so that the gizzard remains active.

But even if grain mixtures made from cereals, pulses, oilseeds, seeds, etc. are fed, it is not possible to completely produce a diet that meets the pigeons' needs. On the one hand, amino acids such as methionine, tryptophan, lysine and cystine are missing, and on the other hand, the vitamins and trace elements that they get from snails, beetles, worms and green plants when flying freely are missing. The provision of grain mixtures also suffers from the problem that the pigeons prefer to pick out those grains that they rarely get when flying freely in fields and meadows or that are particularly "tasty", but do not receive the nutrition that meets their needs. In addition, some pigeons that are early at the feeder or at the front of the order will be able to pick different feed grains than pigeons that get to the feeder later.

If pigeons have to take in different amounts of water and therefore different active substances, this is also not possible without problems, or at least it requires a lot of effort. In addition, not all of the substances essential for the pigeons' nutrition are water-soluble, so they settle in the drinker (especially the minerals) or affect the taste of the water so negatively that it is only taken in small amounts or not at all. This problem exists in particular for the sulphur-containing amino acids methionine and cystine mentioned above, the addition of which to the water means that the water is not taken in at all or only in very small amounts when the pigeons are very thirsty.

The addition of food supplements, which are usually powdered, to grains is hardly possible even when using adhesives such as oil, as even movement in the feed bowl causes the powder to separate from the grains, which are often smooth on the outside. The food supplements then separate when pecking in the feed bowls. If additional oil-based carriers are used, handling becomes very labor-intensive and the distribution of the food supplement over the entire grain mass is imprecise, so that mixing devices must be used, and these and the feed troughs must be cleaned, as fats or oils quickly become rancid under these conditions. Sometimes the pigeons themselves will also become very dirty from these oil-based adhesives.

The simultaneous administration of compressed feed or extrudates together with grain mixtures is also not practical, since the pigeons normally prefer to eat the grain mixture.

The invention is therefore based on the object of creating a feed especially for pigeons (which can also be used for chickens, ducks, geese, quails, pheasants and similar birds) which enables the pigeons to consume the feed grains necessary for their gizzards with the optimally coordinated nutritional supplements without great effort and in an optimal dosage.

According to the invention, this is ensured by a feed in which a base grain is coated with a nutrient mixture. Advantageously, this nutrient mixture can have a coating with a glaze that has a similarly smooth, easily pourable, hard surface as some natural grains, so that whole grains can be easily swallowed.

The coating should ideally consist of ground grains or pulses or oilseeds or a mixture of these, with vitamins, trace elements and possibly amino acids added. The addition of fruit vinegar and healing clay can improve the intestinal flora, the addition of seaweed flour can easily provide the most important minerals, and the addition of thistle seeds and lecithin causes the body to be detoxified.

It is also suggested that the feedstuffs with the basic grain should always be pressed in the same form, so that each species of bird has a size adapted to its needs, whereby other basic grains can be used for times such as moulting or special requirements.

Color changes are not normally necessary, but in order to enable the feeder to recognize different ingredients, it is possible to add a colored binding agent, while also eliminating any color changes when food supplements are changed, whereby the same coloring agents are used for each feeding season, so that the pigeons do not prefer to eat one color and thus perhaps do not eat all of the basic grains as desired.

Another advantage of such grains is that the uniformity of the feed particles means that no separation can occur during production, transport or in the feed container. The pigeons that are initially at the feed trough cannot specialize in individual types of grain and thus feed on a one-sided diet, but rather with each grain of feed a uniform nutrient mix is consumed that is tailored to the pigeon's needs, which also helps the pigeon with digestion because it is tailored to the pigeon's needs.

The simple feeding, which is limited to just one product, can now reliably prevent feeding errors that were previously possible due to incorrect mixing or incorrect dispensing of individual feed components.
