Production of new surface effects on bonded laminated wood panels

Laminated wood panels are known as plywood or "multiplex" panels and are manufactured industrially. They consist of several flat layers of wood that are glued together crosswise, parallel or in a star shape. They are available on the market in different thicknesses.

The external appearance is determined by the outer layers (cover layers) and the edges. The latter shows that it is laminated wood glued together by looking at the individual layers of wood. For furniture construction, these panels are often veneered or painted in a color because of their mostly monotonous cover layer.

The inner layers of the laminated wood panels usually consist of lively-structured wood layers, often interspersed with defects and knots.

In my experience, there is a need for new surfaces in furniture construction, but for ecological reasons, coatings made from foreign materials are often avoided. There is great interest in visual appeal, and in furniture construction there is also an increasing interest in "faulty" wood.

My invention is based on the fact that, knowing the composition of plywood panels, I bring different layers to the surface and thus create a lively surface image that changes in grain and color. This is done, for example, using a computer-controlled woodworking tool or another chip-removing tool. While removing layers vertically (similar to a planer), I simultaneously remove layers horizontally (i.e. going deeper). Using the procedure described above, I achieve a flat, varied surface image that changes between light and dark.

Using a chip-removing tool, for example, I penetrate the material from 0 to 6 mm deep during the surface chip removal, over the entire length of the workpiece.

The board is then processed in the same way on the back from the opposite side. This gives the board a uniform overall thickness, which is necessary for furniture construction.

When removing the chips, I expose, depending on the depth of penetration, different and varying numbers of wood layers with defects and glued joints.

In this way, I create the desired band-like image on the plate surface with alternating light and dark areas.

For interior design, my invention opens up new design possibilities for industrially manufactured, externally identical, laminated plywood panels, e.g. beech or birch plywood. In contrast to chipboard, laminated plywood panels have a wider range of uses due to the definition of their industrial manufacturing method (higher load-bearing capacity and deformability). This is further expanded by the new surface finishes.
