Description
Platinelektroden werden daher aus dünner und dünnster Folie und besonders häufig aus Drahtnetzen angefertigt, um eine große Platinoberfläche bei geringstem Platinaufwand zuThe high price of platinum limits the usability of this partially irreplaceable product Metal in large-scale chemical industry and compels it to be the most economical Use of this precious material. Platinum electrodes are therefore made from thinner and thinnest foil and particularly often Wire meshes made to cover a large platinum surface with the least amount of platinum
ίο schaffen. ίο create. Such electrodes naturally have poor stability. They can hardly be produced in larger dimensions, and a good power supply such as even power distribution over the entire electrode causes extraordinary difficulties. There are many things that can be done to overcome them Constructions have been devised. The patent specification 88341 describes platinum tubes with a well-conducting core (mercury or copper wire) that serves as power supply lines and filled serve as a carrier for the electrodes. Because very thin-walled platinum tubes easily have pores through which the electrolyte could get to the vulnerable core these pipes do not have a certain wall thickness, for which it is relatively considerable more platinum than is required for the network itself. For larger electrodes This construction is therefore not able to bring about the desired savings in platinum.
In the patent 132588 filled with mercury glass tubes are described, in their Walls short platinum wires melted and their protruding ends covered with platinum foils are welded, while the wires melted in the glass tube into the current-carrying Dip mercury. The disadvantage of these tubes is their great fragility.
In other constructions, the power supply is made of lead or leaded copper produced and with a putty that is as resistant as possible against the destructive effect of the electrolyte to some extent protected. Charcoal bodies are also used, on which the platinum foils or the platinum mesh are screwed on with carbon screws or clamped with wedges will. These contacts are gradually made by the immigrating electrolyte spoiled.
Attempts the above constructions to improve stability, durability and platinum savings, showed that platinum electrodes of large dimensions with the greatest stability and operational reliability even when using platinum wire nets with an unusually large mesh size and the smallest wire cross-section if the platinum is welded onto an aluminum framework, that at the same time serves as a power supply. This aluminum framework can advantageously be used as a coolable one Form tube.
Es wurde weiter gefunden, daß das Aluminium der Elektrode, als Anode geschaltet, inIt was further found that the aluminum of the electrode, connected as an anode, is in
Schließlich wurde festgestellt, daß an den Schweißstellen Platin-Aluminium trotz der großen Potentialdifferenz beider Metalle keinerlei Korrosionen auftreten, und daß der Kontakt dauernd gut bleibt.weakly alkaline electrolyte neither acts as an electrode nor goes into solution, anyway the platinum is only part of the electrode and is connected in parallel, as it were. Although the valve effect of aluminum is known for itself, the fact was that this is not due to a second simultaneously parallel electrode in the same electrolyte space is influenced, unforeseeable and surprising. Finally it was found that at the welds platinum-aluminum despite the large potential difference between the two metals no corrosion whatsoever and that the contact remains good at all times.
B. sauren Elektrolyten verwenden. An Stelle
erreicht. If the aluminum is isolated with Bakelite or other suitable materials, the electrode can also be used in other, e.g. B. use acidic electrolytes. Magnesium and metals with a similar effect can also be used in place of aluminum, but because of its price and ease of processing, aluminum will deserve preference for technical applications.
The platinum electrode described can be used with great advantage as an anode in the electrolytic preparation of sodium perborate. The platinum consumption is limited to the lowest possible level. Due to its extraordinary stability, the electrode can be brought into any desired position relative to the cathode. Voltage losses in the supply lines and at the transition from platinum to aluminum. minium are completely excluded if the aluminum framework is dimensioned accordingly, and an advantage that should not be underestimated is an excellent even current distribution over the entire electrode.
