The innovation relates to a plant-based, compostable additive to compostable masses, especially in the organic waste bin and to compostable waste.

Beschreibung:Description: Problem und Stand der Technik:Problem and state of the art:

When it comes to waste disposal, the public sector is increasingly pushing for consistent waste separation and, as a result, the widespread introduction of organic waste bins. Over 40% of household waste is likely to be compostable waste.

Since the introduction of the organic waste bin in the inventor's district in October 1994, complaints from organic waste bin users and residents of the waste composting plant have been increasing. The intense stench and excessive moisture content are the main complaints. A report by the television magazine Frontal (ZDF) on July 11, 1995 reported extensively on the nuisances and dangers of the organic waste bin. The organic waste bin is usually emptied every 14 days or 4 weeks for cost reasons. The odor nuisance is particularly pronounced in warm weather. The damp environment provides an excellent breeding ground for maggots and other vermin. Disinfectants and acid additives would inhibit the decomposition processes, but at the same time would have a negative effect on the composting process and would also unnecessarily pollute the environment. Mineral additives cannot be composted.

Lösung und erreichte Vorteile:Solution and achieved benefits:

The innovation is intended to reduce the moisture content and odor development of the compostable waste and thus help to defuse the problem of the organic waste bin without hindering the composting process.

The resulting liquids and odorous gases are bound by simply sprinkling processed straw in several layers of 1 cm to 3 cm each onto a layer of organic waste that is approximately 10 to 30 cm high.

The dry and healthy straw is first chopped into small pieces of around 1-4 mm and then formed into briquettes in a briquetting machine with a diameter of 1.5 to 6.5 cm at a pressure of up to 5000 bar. This process breaks down the straw, giving it a high absorbency for liquids and odors. However, as the absorbency of the whole briquette is too slow, the briquettes are shredded again in a mill to create a compostable material that can be spread and has a high absorbency for the liquids and odors from the organic waste.

The effectiveness of odor binding is increased when harmless neutral salts from the group of alkali and alkaline earth metals, primarily magnesium chloride, calcium chloride or sodium chloride, are added to the processed straw, as described for example in DE-OS 41 09 590 Al exclusively for animal litter. For this purpose, contents of e.g. magnesium chloride of 1% - 20% based on the end product have proven to be practical, but particularly preferred are 5% - 10%. If higher amounts of salt are applied, re-drying is necessary.

The product is sprinkled directly into the organic waste bin in households as needed or is applied daily to the organic compost in composting plants as a 3 to 8 cm cover.
