Description
The invention relates to a method for pretreating light metal surfaces before soldering (which is usually are covered with an oxide layer), in particular of aluminum, titanium, magnesium, beryllium and their Alloys, by applying metallic layers. The method according to the invention is particularly advantageous when soft soldering these metals.
The use of special solders is known for brazing light metals. By application a lot If the flux is aggressive, the oxidic surface is etched so that solder wetting can take place. That However, soldering causes the greatest difficulties in most cases and is with magnesium and its Alloys and Al cast alloys so far not at all or only with the use of special processes (Ultrasound, friction soldering) possible. Well-known aggressive aluminum soft solder fluxes can be used in the electronics industry for example, cannot be used.
It is known to use metallic layers such as nickel, copper, silver, tin or zinc on aluminum surfaces Electroplating to improve the soldering ability, but these layers are not sufficiently adhesive.
It has also been proposed to use thin layers of nickel or nickel alloy, e.g. B. Nickel-palladium layers, to be applied to the base to be soldered, in particular by vapor deposition or sputtering. These Processes have certain disadvantages, however, since nickel, especially in vapor form, has a toxic effect.
Dabei sollten keine toxisch wirkenden Materialien Verwendung finden. The object of the present invention was therefore to provide a process for the pretreatment of light metal surfaces to be found before soldering, especially of aluminum, titanium, magnesium, beryllium and their alloys, so that they can be used in particular with normal soft solders using the soft solder fluxes customary for this purpose Have it soldered without errors and firmly in place. No toxic materials should be used.
According to the invention this object is achieved in that on the surface to be soldered a layer of a Palladium alloy with cobalt and / or iron is applied. These alloys preferably contain 20 up to 70% cobalt and / or iron and are applied in a thickness of 0.05 to 15 μm.
Surprisingly, these covers show very good adhesion to the light metal, especially when they were applied by vapor deposition in a vacuum or by a sputtering process. The liability of the sputtered Metal atoms are larger than with normal high vacuum evaporation.
An even better adhesion of the support on the light metal surfaces to be soldered is achieved by a previous ion bombardment (glow discharge) achieved, which roughened the oxidic surface in part or even is removed so that the coating metal can attach to the pure Grur.d-Metaü.
However, there are also light metal alloys, e.g. B. those containing zinc and / or cadmium, in which this alloy partner already rises to the surface with the heat generated by the ion bombardment diffuses and even partially evaporates. Such a pretreatment is unsuitable here. Have proven well With such light metal alloys, thin hard intermediate layers applied by sputtering are found Chromium, titanium, magnesium or aluminum in a thickness of preferably 0.02 to 0.2 µm. Particularly proven have titanium layers in magnesium or magnesium alloys to increase the adhesive strength; such Intermediate layers made of chrome, titanium, magnesium or aluminum are also found in light metal alloys that do not contain zinc often an advantage to increase the adhesive strength. Another advantage of the palladium-cobalt according to the invention or palladium-iron alloy coatings are their high scratch resistance, which is considerably higher than that of the individual components. Aluminum foils or sheets with an approximately 2 μm thick layer of Pd 50Co, can therefore be handled and stored without special care. Beryllium discs After the palladium alloy has been applied, they can still be soldered without difficulty even after long periods of storage will.
Folgende Beispiele sollen das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren näher erläutern:The following examples are intended to explain the process according to the invention in more detail:
Sections of an aluminum foil of 20 μm thickness were placed on the substrate plate in a sputtering system of conventional design (diode system). The recipient was evacuated to a pressure of 6 × 10 " 6 Torr, then argon was admitted and regulated so that the pressure was 8 × 10" 3 Torr with the pump running and the gas flowing. First, ♦ the foil was pre-cleaned for 5 minutes by »sputter-etching« (ion bombardment). The film was then given a layer of 0.1 μm thick PdSOCo layer under a target made of Pd50% Co. These Al foils treated in this way could be soldered without defects using soft solder.
"Beryllium windows" for X-ray tubes must be cut into appropriately machined pipe sections, e.g. B. made of Vacon metal, be soldered in hard. During this soldering, the oxidic metal surfaces prevent one Soldering. The oxide can be removed mechanically immediately before the soldering process is carried out, better however, a coating according to the invention is suitable.
For this purpose, the disks, which only need to be soldered at the edge, were covered in the middle with a turned part. These wafers were then placed on the substrate plate in the sputtering system mentioned. The recipient was evacuated to 6 x 10 "6 torr, then set a working pressure of 1 x 10 -2 Torr with argon. The oxide layer of the beryllium disks was removed by sputter etching Then, the discs were given an edge coating with a 2 microns. thick Pd50Co overlay under a Pd50% Co target. The coated strip was about 2 mm wide. These Be sheets coated in this way could still be flawless with hard solder (e.g. 65% Ag, 20% Cu , 15% Pd) into pipe sockets made of Vacon by inductive heating in a vacuum at about 900 ° C. The solder ran evenly, the soldering was vacuum-tight.
3. Aluminum sheets were mounted in a conventional type of evaporation system on a turntable at a distance of 200 mm from the evaporators. After evacuation, the Al surfaces were pre-cleaned by a glow discharge at a pressure of about 1 × 10 " 2 Torr. The recipient was then evacuated to a pressure of 5-10" 5 Torr. Chromium was first evaporated (sublimed) from an evaporator at approx. 1150 ° C. up to a layer thickness of approx. 0.1 μm. Then an alloy of Pd50% Fe was evaporated with the same vacuum from a second evaporator at approx. 1250 to 1300 ° C., so that a layer of approx. 1 μm thickness was formed on the metal sheets. The turntable with the metal sheets rotated during the smoldering process as well as during the vaporization.
These sheets could be made with commercially available soft solders solder well; well-adhering and evenly running soldering zones were achieved; using usual Even soldering could be achieved by surge soldering machines.
By covering individual parts, e.g. B. by means of stencils, in the vapor deposition or coating In the sputtering process, it was possible to apply the solder adhesive layer only to individual parts of the metal sheets. At The solder then did not adhere to the uncoated areas.
