Verfahren zur Darstellung von Sulfochloriden der Phenol-o-c.arbonsäurenProcess for the preparation of sulfochlorides of phenol-o-c.arboxylic acids
und ihrer Derivate.and their derivatives.
Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 14. August 1912 ab.Patented in the German Empire on August 14, 1912.
Patentschrift 98030, Kl. 12) erhalten; Nitrobenzol gibt Nitrobenzolsulfochlorid (vgl. Patentschrift 89997, Kl. 12) usw. With the action of sulfuric acid chlorohydrin on hydrocarbons and their chlorineor Nitro substitution products at low temperatures (+ 5 ° and below) are known the sulfochlorides of these compounds obtained, in most cases also the corresponding sulfonic acids and sulfones arise as by-products. Thus benzene and sulfuric acid chlorohydrin became benzene sulfochloride (Ber. 42 [1909], pp. 1802 ff. And pp. 2057/58), a mixture of o- and p-toluenesulfochloride (see patent specification 98030, cl. 12) obtained; Nitrobenzene gives nitrobenzene sulfochloride (see patent specification 89997, Class 12) etc.
On the other hand, sulfochlorides are formed from hydroxyl-containing aromatic compounds Connections in this way have not yet been described. In the literature There is very little information about the course of the action of sulfuric acid chlorohydrin on aromatic hydroxyl compounds. By treating 2-oxynaphthalene-7-sulfonic acid With sulfuric acid chlorohydrin in the cold, Dressel and Kothe developed 2-oxynaphthalene-i · 7-disulfonic acid won (see Ber. 27 [1894], p. 1206; patent specification 77596, class 22), and Pisanello gives in the gazz. chim. ital. 18 [188S], p. 347 bis 354 that he obtained a salicylic mono- and disulfonic acid.
Furthermore, it is briefly mentioned in the patent specification 74602, class 12, that from gallic acid and Sulfuric acid chlorohydrin contains gallic sulphonic acids. More detailed test conditions are in not specified in the latter case.
According to this one should have expected that the action of sulfuric acid chlorohydrin on hydroxyl-containing aromatic compounds to sulfonic acids under all circumstances, not but would lead to sulfochlorides of this body class.
In contrast, it has now been found that the technically extremely valuable sulfochlorides the phenol-o-carboxylic acids in a very simple and technically easily feasible manner thereby can be obtained by converting sulfuric acid chlorohydrin to phenol - ο - carboxylic acids or allows their derivatives to act. It is necessary to have a large excess of sulfuric acid chlorohydrin is used. The temperature at which the sulfochlorides arise is different in the individual cases. While with some phenol-ocarboxylic acids The corresponding sulfochlorides are already formed in the cold, one has to warm up slightly with others, but could in all cases the reaction can be brought to an end below 100 °.
Wenn alles eingetragen ist und die Salzsäureentwicklung aufgehört hat, wird noch eine Zeitlang bis auf 40 ° angewärmt und alsdann die Flüssigkeit unter Rühren in Eis eingetragen.138 parts of salicylic acid are converted into 552 parts of sulfuric acid chlorohydrin with cooling entered, the temperature being expediently not allowed to rise above 30 °. if everything has been entered and the development of hydrochloric acid has ceased, it is warmed up to 40 ° for a while and then the Liquid added to ice with stirring.
It is filtered off and sent to the Air dried. The new compound is easily soluble in ether, difficult in benzene. From the latter solvent it is obtained in fine white needles starting at 171 to Melt 172 ° while foaming. When saponified, the sulfochloride becomes known p-sulfosalicylic acid, it comes to him accordingly the constitution

The melting points of the sulfochlorides of the phenol-o-carboxylic acids are somewhat different found, depending on whether one heats up quickly or slowly, which can be attributed to it it is likely that they decompose when they melt.
