Zur Darstellung von Wasserglas hat man bisher Kieselsäure mit Soda bzw. Pottasche und Kohle zusammen geschmolzen.So far, silica with soda or potash has been used to represent water glass and coal melted together.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man in bedeutend einfacherer Weise Wasserglas erhält, wenn man Kieselsäure in fein verteilter Form, z. B. feinen Sand oder Lehm; mit entsprechenden Mengen eines Alkalisalzes, z. B. Alkalichlorid oder Alkalisulfat, zusammen im Autoklaven unter Druck auf höhere Temperaturen erhitzt.
